Intercultural and Sustainable School Furniture
Intercultural and Sustainable School Furniture
Given the lack of school furniture supplies in peruvian Amazon communities, the Santari project -timber tree in ashaninka- as an applied research initiative by Anampiki (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú) set itself to solve the following question:
How might we design school furniture that nurtures an intercultural learning experience and is based on local materials?
After working for 2 years in the Rio Tambo basin (Junín), we designed and implemented school furniture manufactured in the same indigenous communities based on their own local materials and capabilities. The new design also proved right in facilitating and fostering an intercultural learning experience for both teachers and students.
In this document you will find a summary of the process we followed, the design principles we applied, and our final proposal of school furniture for Amazon communities.
