Hi, I'm Santanu, a ResearchER in the field of Applied Geology and geochemistry

 Welcome

Hi there! I'm a Researcher having almost 11 years of experience - conducting research in the academic field. I am presently appointed as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Geology, Mizoram Central University, Aizawl. I was awarded the Ph.D. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad, Jharkhand, India in 2021. I completed my M.Sc. (1st class) in Applied Geology from the Department of Geology, Presidency University, Kolkata, West Bengal, India and graduated (B.Sc. 1st class with honors) from the Department of Geology, Presidency College, University of Calcutta, West Bengal, India.

My research field encompasses organic geochemistry, organic petrology, stable isotope geochemistry, geochemistry of coal bed gas and shale gas, palaeoclimatology and geoarchaeology. My goal is to get involved in the interdisciplinary subjects related to coal, shale, and petroleum geochemistry for the improvement in their applications in the near cleaner future.

Qualifications: Ph.D. (Applied Geology and Applied Geochemistry; 2016-2021); M.Sc. (Applied Geology; 2013-2015); B.Sc. (Honors in Geology; 2010-2013)

Summary and research themes

Summary:

Bright and research-oriented Geologist focused on gathering information and analyzing data. Energetic, enthusiastic, inquisitive and hands-on with ability to characterize sediment, perform organic petrological, organic and inorganic geochemical as well as stable isotopic studies. Hard working, responsible and highly motivated; have in-depth subject knowledge and ability to conduct research independently.

Research themes:

Santanu conducts research works on organic petrology that includes maceral-micolithotype identification and quantification, vitrinite reflectance measurement and determination of optical anisotropy of coal and shale. The organic geochemical studies involve the investigation of heteroatomic chemistry of coal and shale of different rank using the X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy, microstructural ordering through the Raman and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic insights of bulk organic matter as well as lipid biomarker distribution in coals. Also, he takes keen interest in rare earth and trace element disposition in coal and shale along with major elemental oxide distribution to interpret the palaeodepositional environment and palaeoclimatic conditions. His interest also lies in palaeoclimatology using the lipid biomarker and stable isotopes as the tools. In complementary, he deals in stable isotopes of coal bed and shale gas and associated formation water to have a view on microbially enhanced methane production from existing and depleted wells.
