Babasaheb R. Sankapal is Professor and Head, Chairman Board of Studies, Department of Physics, Former Associate Dean (Exam), Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur, Maharashtra, India.  Dr Sankapal obtained his Ph.D. degree in 2001 from Shivaji University Kolhapur (M.S.).  served as as Scientist at Helmholtz Centre, Berlin, Germany; JSPS Fellow at Gifu University, Japan; and Research Associate at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, USA,  . 

Dr Sankapals name is listed in “World’s Top 2% Scientist for year 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 & 2025 as per Stanford’s University and he has achieved AD Scientific Index India Rank less than 375. As per Research.com, Ranking of Top Scientists in the field of Materials, he ranked 104 in India and 8788 in the world. 

He served as Chairman, Board of Studies for the Department,  and HoD, he successfully received grant of 2.47 crore (DST-FIST).Dr Sankapal has 27 years of research and 17 years of teaching experience. On his credit, he has 10 major research projects cost about 2.82 crore. As HoD (Physics), he successfully got DST-FIST grant of Rs 2.19 Crore.

He supervised 17 Ph.D. and 21 MSc project students, published  208 Scopus research articles Scopus H-index-58, Citations: 8500+ (Average Citations-40),  Google Scholar H-index-66, Citations: 9800+ (Average Citations-45) and average impact factor 5. 

Dr Sankapal's Ph.D. students serving/served as Postdoc Fellows in Germany, Japan, UK, USA, Denmark, Spain, S. Korea and Israel. Two students listed in Worlds Top 2% scientist list for year 2024 & 2025.  

Dr Sankapal has Edited one book in Springer, contributed three book chapters (Springer and Elsevier). and two granted Indian Patents on his credit. He  served as a coordinator for arranging two self finance STTP and co-conevner for one conference and serving as member, Research Advisory Committee (RAC) NIT Raipur, member BoS NIT Raipur and MNNIT Allahabad. Department of Science and Technology (DST) nominated as National Expert Advisory Committee Member on the New and Emerging Energy Storage Technologies (NEST) program-2025 .
