San Joaquin Elementary School, situated at Lope K. Santos St., San Joaquin, Pasig City, stands as a beacon of educational excellence and community development.           

Pasig City, located on the eastern border of Metro Manila and Rizal province, is named after the Pasig River. The first, highly urbanized city in the National Capital Region. It has a population of 803,159 people, according to the 2020 census. Pasig, a formerly rural settlement, is now primarily residential and industrial, but has become more commercial in recent years, particularly since the construction of the Ortigas Center business district to the west.            

The city was the fourth-largest city in the National Capital Region in terms of population. This city contributed 5.08 percent of the region's 9.9 million population. The city contributed 0.66 percent of the total population of 76.5 million on a national level. The city's rapid economic growth presents a significant challenge in terms of solid waste management, flooding, pollution, health education, and environmental degradation. The local government has taken a proactive approach to addressing these concerns, instituting valuable solutions, and assisting all Pasigueños.

Likewise, San Joaquin is one of the 30 barangays in Pasig City. It is located on the Pasig River’s southern side or left bank. It is situated approximately 14° 33’ North, 121° 5’ East on the island of Luzon. Elevation at these coordinates is estimated at 8.3 meters or 27.2 feet above mean sea level. San Joaquin shares a common border with different barangays in Pasig such as Bambang, Kalawaan, and Buting and barangay Ligid-Tipas of Taguig City as well as Santo Rosario- Kanluran and Silangan of Pateros. Its population as determined by the 2020 Census was 13, 823. This represented 1.72% of the total population of Pasig City. The latest census figures in 2020 denote a growth rate of 0.96%, or an increase of 616 people, from the previous population of 13,207 in 2015.

         As one of the four public educational institutions in Cluster IV, SJES holds a pivotal role as the central school in the cluster, shaping the educational landscape for learners from kindergarten to grade six. The school's expansive 9,200 sqm. lot, acquired through two instances, reflects a rich history of community collaboration. Lot B-1, covering 5,000 sq. meters, was purchased by the municipal government in 1953 from a barangay resident. In 1975, United Laboratories, Inc. donated the adjoining 4,400 sq. meter Lot 1-B-1. Presently, the school boasts a prime location, strategically nestled behind San Joaquin-Kalawaan High School, close to essential services such as markets, churches, LGUs, and NGOs satellite offices.

           Founded in 1950 as a barrio school with classes initially held in rented rooms, SJES evolved into a complete elementary school in 1960 under Mrs. Belen R. Umali as Head Teacher. This transformative step alleviated parents' challenges of sending their children to intermediate grades in distant schools. Beyond conventional offerings, the school has embraced innovation. In the current school year (SY 2023-2024), SJES under the leadership and administration of Dr. Ruben H. Opeña received approval from the DepEd-NCR to offer the Special Science Elementary School Program, marking a historic milestone as the first school in the Division of Pasig to pioneer such an advanced curriculum.

           The school's immediate catchment areas extend beyond San Joaquin, attracting learners from nearby barangays such as Kalawaan, Napindan Taguig, and Sto. Rosario Pateros. A significant majority of learners transition from SJES to San Joaquin-Kalawaan High School for secondary education, attesting to the school's reputation and quality offerings that extend beyond its immediate vicinity.

          In the current school year 2023-2024, SJES hosts a diverse community of 3,786 learners across kindergarten to grade six. The school's infrastructure includes 102 instructional classrooms and 8 ancillary rooms, meticulously maintained to provide a conducive learning environment. The commitment to personalized attention is evident in the pupil-classroom ratio of 35:1 for Key Stage 1 and 40:1 for Key Stage 2, as well as the learner-seat ratio of 1:1 for Kindergarten, Grades 3, 4, 5, and 6, and 2:1 for Grades 1-2.

            Beyond the classroom, SJES actively engages with the immediate community and beyond through fruitful partnerships with diverse stakeholders. Collaborations with Barangay San Joaquin, corporate entities like Cognizant Philippines and Metrobank Inc., and non-profit organizations such as Binhi English Literacy Foundation and Khan Academy Philippines create a dynamic network that enhances the overall educational experience.
