Intrigued by the history of the Fulbright Scholar Program and the current research on overall education abroad experiences for faculty, it was fascinating to learn about the growing attention to the value in supporting the transition or cultural understanding for traveling scholars (Rumbley & Wit, 2017). This led me to contact a few Mason and INTO Mason instructors with experience in teaching at Mason's branch campus in Songdo, South Korea.
According to Mahmood and Burke in 2018, the acculturation process in higher education is almost exclusively being researched through the lens of students. However, other stakeholders also experience the same cultural adjustments as their students when going abroad (Wang et al., 2018). Many scholars - especially those embarking on their first teaching abroad experience - lack critical support from their home institution (Sy & Cruz, 2019).
Through the interview highlights regarding teaching experiences, the future implications of education abroad for faculty are further explored.
