Dr. Shin's teaching philosophy is that teaching and learning are not simply a one-way transfer of knowledge from an instructor to students, but an interactive effort between the instructor and students to seek answers together, explore wisdom, and address public concerns from existing knowledge. 

His teaching interests include hydraulics, surface water and groundwater hydrology, water resources engineering, hydroinformatics, systems thinking and dynamics, integrated water infrastructure management, and resilience engineering.
