PROMPT - Case 1 – Database Spike / API Timeout
We had to restart the managed cloud database. To do that, we scaled it up before restart and scaled it down afterward. The database was spiking to maximum utilization and even simple queries were not executing. No logs were visible on the database during this period. The API remained running, but response time increased significantly because the database was taking longer than usual to process requests. The API was restarted during troubleshooting. The service was restarted a second time after the issue reoccurred during the call. Access was restricted to a specific analytics dashboard, as it was heavily utilizing the database and forcing it to max out. Users were temporarily blocked from accessing it. The dashboard was newly deployed a few weeks prior. The “Not Found” errors observed on the monitoring service were mostly due to timeouts. It appears the analytics engine was attempting to reach the monitoring database, but the API was unresponsive due to backend performance degradation, the database was observed spiking at 100%, impacting outbound instant payment transactions and two major digital channels. The database and API were restarted, and normal operations were restored. Queued transactions were reprocessed from the backend. The exact cause of the spike is still under investigation, but a database lock is suspected. From this kindly draft a mail for service desk with the following
1. The title
2. The issue
3. Root cause
4. What was impacted
5. Symptoms
6. Resolution and other necessary details.
RESPONSE - Subject: Incident Report – Monitoring Database Spike Impacting Outbound Payment Transactions
Dear Service Desk Team,
Please find below the details of the incident observed in the production monitoring environment:
Issue Summary
A production monitoring database experienced sustained CPU spikes (100% utilization), resulting in API timeouts and transaction processing delays across multiple digital channels.
A recently deployed analytics dashboard was over-utilizing database resources.
The dashboard triggered high-volume queries, forcing the database to max out.
Possible database lock condition suspected.
Backend fraud analytics service was unable to communicate effectively with the database.
Outbound interbank transactions delayed
Two major digital banking channels affected
Monitoring dashboard access temporarily restricted
Queued transactions accumulated during degradation
Scaled up managed cloud database instance
Restarted database and associated API services
Restricted access to resource-intensive dashboard
Backend team reprocessed queued transactions
System scaled back down after stabilization
System performance restored.
Root cause investigation ongoing (suspected DB lock condition).
