In the late 80's, resident and retired tennis instructor Bob Hawley recruited many of Sandpiper’s first tennis players. He went door to door, personally offering free tennis lessons to fellow residents. With Bob’s help, the roster grew to over 100 players. The court lights were donated in 1995 by Sandpiper resident Elizabeth Harrison in memory of her husband, devoted Sandpiper tennis enthusiast, James Harrison. At the height of Sandpiper tennis (late 90's early 2000's), former resident Liz Morey organized group captains and coordinated leveled play across the community’s four courts, the two near the west-side clubhouse (now the pickle ball courts) and the two remaining tennis courts near the east-side recreation center. Though the group is smaller in 2025, the spirit remains strong welcoming tennis players of varying levels to enjoy fun and friendly competition in a supportive atmosphere.
