John received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art education from the University of New Mexico along with postgraduate coursework. He also holds a Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His majors include jewelry and metalwork, ceramics, sculpture, drawing, painting and mixed media. During and after high-school, John attended the Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute receiving certificate hours in oxy-acytene welding, furniture design and construction, auto paint and body, upholstery, electronics, machine shop, auto mechanics and airbrush painting.
He holds fellowships from the E.E. Ford Foundation and The Summer Six Fellowship program at Skidmore College. John has been a presenter/lecturer in conferences through the New Mexico Art Education Association and the Connecticut Art Education Association as well as a consultant to New Mexico State Board of Education.
John is also a Robert Rauschenberg Foundation “Power of Art” recipient and has attended honors seminar workshops at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Colorado Institute of Art. He has exhibited his work in Albuquerque, N.M., Washington, D.C., and Connecticut In the summer of 2009, John attended the summer session at the Tamarind Institute of Fine Art Lithography located in Albuquerque, N.M. In 2019, John received the Outstanding Secondary Art Educator Award from the Connecticut Art Education Association.
