Crafting Your
Message

Introduction

A website is a place to put all your information on the web and it usually starts by creating a unique homepage. A website is made up with a mix of text, images, videos and icons that tells a unified story. Markup language called HTML is used to create websites but luckily we don’t need to know HTML language because we can use free website builders like Google Sites or Sway that help you quickly and easily create websites.

Clarify Your Goals

There are many reasons to create digital media content, so you need to think about what it is you are trying to accomplish.

Are you informing? Teaching? Persuading? Selling or marketing something?

This will help you determine what information you need to include and will ultimately help to frame out the design and tone (or feel) of your created content.

Think about your content creation from these perspectives:

  • What is the purpose or goal of your content?

  • Why? What is the objective of your content (i.e. how will your content achieve your goal)?

  • What do you want your audience to do or think, after engaging with your content?

  • What drives the audience (or users) to your content?

Possible goals of your content creation could be:

Teaching

Entertainment

Promotion

Calls to action

Sharing news

Sharing data

E-commerce or business

Personal interest

Consider what you want your audience to do or think after engaging with your digital media content and this will allow you to focus your creative efforts to achieve that goal.

Figuring out these two points (purpose or goal, and objective) in advance of creating your content will help you to determine what drives the audience to your content, and will help you to determine what form of communication tactic(s) to use, touching on both modality and multimedia.
