Sanda Lum is an Australian primary school teacher and author. She was born in Sittwe, Rakhine State, Myanmar. She is of Arakanese descent. Sanda’s Arakanese childhood name was Lun Lun Su Khine. Sanda’s family’s Myanmar citizenship was taken away by the Burmese military government in 1986 due to her parents’ involvement in the Arakan liberation movement. Sanda’s international children’s picture books titled ‘Katherina Giselle’ (released on 13 October 2023) and ‘Serin’ (released on 24 May 2024), published by Austin Macauley Publishers™ Ltd, are available worldwide. She has a forthcoming children’s picture book titled ‘Marcus and the Black Opal Mug’ with Austin Macauley Publishers™ Ltd (release date: TBA).
Sanda spent six years of her childhood in Bangladesh. Sanda (also known as Chanda Rakhain/Rakhine in Bangladesh) attended Bharateswari Homes, a boarding school for girls in Bangladesh for the latter years of her hiding as a refugee in Bangladesh. Sanda migrated to Sydney, Australia as a refugee and studied at Chester Hill High School. She completed Master of Teaching, Primary (Hons) at the University of Sydney (conferred in 2009). She also studied Master of Science in Medicine (withdrawn in 2006), and Juris Doctor (withdrawn in 2020) at the University of Sydney. She completed Bachelor of Medical Science at the University of Technology, Sydney (conferred in 2004). She worked for many years in medical research and the education sector.
