Happy last day of PreK/K! It was a FUN one, but it flew by! I hope your kiddos had a blast and the memories of our time together this year lasts a lifetime! Today, we wrote about our favorite animal and explored our sense of taste while celebrating our trip around the world with a multicultural potluck! We also had extra play time inside and outside to bond as a class for one last day! A special shout out to Mrs. Barker, Mrs. MacKay, Mrs. Hernandez, Mrs. McLeod, and Mrs. Hamilton for volunteering in our class! We appreciate you so much, and our potluck couldn't have happened without you!

Here is a little peek into our day!

For writing, we completed page 77: "My Favorite Animal." It is always fun hearing your kids' answers as to why they love a particular thing! Lots of students love guinea pigs, hamsters, birds, and dogs in our class. We enjoy animals that are cute, soft, cuddly, chunky, and help out in the garden! Each student wrote one opinion sentence: "My favorite animal is _____ because _____." Make sure to check out their reasons because they are really descriptive! Since it is the end of the school year, this book is now yours to keep! There are plenty of pages that we didn't have time to get to that would be great summer writing practice!

For science, we wrapped up our five senses unit with our sense of taste! We read bits and pieces of several books to get some background:

Senses in My World: Tasting by Martha E. H. Rustad

Senses Are For Everything: The Five Senses by Katherine Hengel

My Body by Andrea Pennington and Penny Lamprell

Incredible Human Body by Kingfisher

How Does The Ear Hear? And Other Questions About the Five Senses by Melissa Stewart

In the simplest of terms, food goes onto our tongue, which has thousands of taste buds, and these taste buds send messages to our brain to let us know what we are tasting. Not only do we have taste buds on our tongue, but we have them on the roof of our mouth, too, for a total nearing 10,000 taste buds altogether! Saliva also plays a huge role in tasting by breaking down/digesting our food and interacting with our taste buds. Last but not least, our sense of smell (which we covered last week) also factors into how we taste, which is why when we are sick and have a stuffy nose, our favorite foods don't taste as great! We discussed some of the main types of flavors that our taste buds experience: sweet, salty, sour, bitter, savory/umami, and spicy. It seems like our class likes sweet and sour food the best! What a fun journey it has been to explore our five senses together!

For history, we concluded the year with our multicultural potluck! Wow, this was absolutely delicious! Thank you to all of the families that contributed to this event! Here is a little sample of what we got to try today:

Egypt: baklava

Spain: patatas bravas

Italy: gelato

Germany: bratwurst, Bavarian pretzels with cheese

China: veggie egg rolls, fried rice

Israel: lavash bread and hummus

Mexico: taquitos

Peru: alfajores cookies, plantain chips, nuts, and crackers

Be sure to ask your kids what they enjoyed the most! I don't know if I can even pick a favorite because it was all so good! What a perfect ending to our traveling adventures this year!

For our Bible lesson, we read a devotion from the book Indescribable: 100 Devotions About God & Science titled "Taste and See." Of course, we are tying in our science learning on the five senses with what God teaches us in His Word. He designed our taste buds not only to protect us, but also so that we could enjoy the goodness of His blessings! What a sweet Lord we have in Him!

Our Bible memory verse for the summer is:

Psalm 34:8 "Taste and see that the Lord is good"

Please study and dwell on this verse!
