This course is perhaps my favorite course of all time. I enjoyed the professor, the course I took, and simply all facets of learning related to the course. Wireless Technology is a course that offers the fundamentals of how wireless networks function. There are wireless certifications offered and I've yet to take them, but I will be applying for them in the CWNP site.
This course taught everything about what wireless is and how it's propagated across mediums. I learned about what parts of the electromagnetic spectrum does wireless reside in, what affects it, how you can amplify signals, what attenuation is, the Fresnel Zone, and even properties of the geostationary belt for satellites. This course was my first real entry into understanding the different bodies that govern the many rules regarding Internet and wireless properties, such as the Wi-Fi Alliance and the IEEE. There was only one project that this course offered and that was working with a team member to work on a router to configure the wireless protocol on that router. My team member and I had to follow a few steps to get this to work because the wireless router provided to us was factory reset. Our first step was to procure the manual for that specific router that we were using from the manufacturer's website. The router I was assigned was a very simple Linksys router, so the default information wasn't hard to locate on the Internet. After we found login credentials online, we worked on IP configurations, MAC address filtering, port forwarding, setting up an access point with hidden SSIDs and secure passwords, and we had to rename the router to our team name and reconfigure the login credentials. A project like this was a good hands-on lesson because it's what I'm expected to know and do in a work environment. I'll be competing with many other candidates for work in the IT field so it's only natural to enhance one's self with as many skills as possible to be more marketable.
I can say that this course was what really defined where I wanted to go in my IT career. If not for this class, I would still be struggling in making a decision, but it's made me realize that i love networks and wish to pursue a career in wireless networking like with cloud services or something similar. I believe my own IT "personality" has been developed thanks to this course. In terms of marketability, it's much, much easier for me to show my confidence in my work and to be more than just another IT person. I have learned how to be unique and flourish with an organization, team, or company.
