I was raised in the little slice of heaven, Seneca, Kansas. I am the youngest son of three boys to a truck driver and a secretary. We have always been a very tight family. My brothers and I are our parents' world, and they are our biggest fans who never missed a game of any of ours. With three boys in the house, sports was a daily part of our lives. Since I was two years old, I was dragged around to all of my older brothers' games: football, baseball, basketball, soccer, and track meets, until I too started to play in all these sports. Having two older brothers has made me better. My oldest brother was a great basketball player, and my other brother was an All-State football player. They both have had a big impact on my life. They watch all my games, they are my biggest fans and my most honest critics. I have had the benefit of them challenging me, pushing me, and testing me every step of the way.
Growing up, my dream has been to be a professional athlete. I have had many passionate discussions with teachers through the years who have tried to get me to consider a “realistic” choice for my future. I have always fought for the idea that there is never a Plan B, if there is you are not putting 100% into Plan A. For me, Plan A has always been to play professional sports.
Then when I started doing work study my senior year at the local vet clinic, things shifted for me. I found something else besides sports that I enjoyed immensely, and started to have a new dream for my future. I wanted to become a veterinarian! Since day one working there, I have had real experiences working with animals side by side with one of the veterinarians. I have been in the clinic and out on the farms, I have worked with small animals and large animals, I have helped with surgeries and helped with annual shots, I have helped put a sick pet down and helped deliver a C-section of puppies.
The first college visit I went on was to K-state, they have the best veterinarian program in the state. I liked it, and I could see myself going there. The last college visit I went on was to Baker. They have given me the very best offer to play football there. I really liked it and can see myself playing football there. Baker does not offer a pre-vet program. Life is full of choices, hard choices, very hard choices. Do I play football at the college level the next step to my lifelong dream, or do I go to K-state and start down the path to a career that would bring me lots of enjoyment?
People find me to be an upbeat, team player with excellent communication skills. I am a dedicated person with a deep belief in positivity and kindness. I have been successful at relationships; my ability to relate to many different people has been an asset for me. These perspectives have strengthened my leadership skills and would help me on the football field. I also understand very much the significance of the unequivocal love that pets convey to all of our lives. I know I would make a compassionate veterinarian. In the vet clinic, I have demonstrated my observation skills along with being able to remain calm in a high pressure situation. I have the ability to succeed in either choice for my next step; it is just a very difficult choice.
When I think about other aspects of my life in the future, I know that I want to travel the world. I want to see everything there is to see. Traveling in the future is a top priority. I want to spend time backpacking, staying in hostels, living in a van, and meeting all kinds of people. Unfortunately this doesn’t help me make my decision because I think both of these paths would afford me the ability to travel in the future.
