If you want secure in-ear isolation with a trusted ecosystem for earphones for basketball and ambient awareness, choose Samsung Galaxy Buds SM-R170; if you need active noise cancellation, ultra-long battery life, and low-latency gaming performance, choose Back Bay Audio True.
• Samsung Galaxy Buds SM-R170: Delivers premium sound tuned by AKG with splash resistance and wingtips for stability, but lacks active noise cancellation and has shorter total playtime. Best for Samsung users who value fit security and ambient awareness during workouts.
• Back Bay Audio True: Offers deep active noise cancellation, 25-hour total battery life, and Bluetooth 5.4 low latency for gaming, though it uses standard touch controls without physical wings. Best for commuters and gamers who prioritize silence and extended usage over brand-specific features.
• The Decision: Pick the Samsung if your priority is sweat resistance and staying aware of your surroundings on the court; pick Back Bay Audio if you need to block out distractions or play mobile games without audio lag.
The Samsung Galaxy Buds SM-R170 is designed for the user who prioritizes a secure physical fit and high-fidelity audio without breaking the bank. What stands out immediately in the design is the inclusion of adjustable ear tips and wingtips right out of the box. This isn't just a nice-to-have feature; for anyone using earphones for basketball, the wingtip provides a mechanical lock that prevents the buds from bouncing out during intense lateral movements or sudden sprints. The rounded tip shape combined with these wings creates a stable seal that feels natural in the ear canal, which is critical when you are dribbling, defending, or jumping for a rebound.
Audio quality is another pillar of this product, thanks to drivers tuned by AKG. If you listen to fast-paced music or podcasts during your workout, this tuning ensures the rhythm stays tight and the vocals remain clear. Furthermore, the IPX2 splash-resistant rating means these buds can handle sweat and spills without issue. You do not need to worry about a quick rinse after a heavy practice session, making them a durable choice for daily athletic use.

However, there are trade-offs to consider. While the buds offer "Sound Isolation" and an Ambient Aware mode that lets you hear traffic or coworkers, they do not feature Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). If you are trying to focus in a loud gym or block out the roar of a crowd, the passive isolation might not be enough. Additionally, the battery life, while solid at six hours per charge, falls short of competitors offering all-day power. If you plan on listening for multiple hours straight without access to a charging case, you may find yourself running low. This product is best suited for the Android user who needs a reliable, sweat-proof companion for sports and doesn't require the digital magic of noise-canceling technology.
The Back Bay Audio True earbuds target a different demographic entirely: the listener who demands silence and endurance. These earbuds are built around a core philosophy of "Deep Noise Cancelling," utilizing AI to filter out background noise from planes, trains, and traffic. For someone looking for open ear earbuds for basketball scenarios where you might want to shut out the world to focus on your form or music, the Active Noise Cancellation here is a game-changer. Unlike the Samsung, which relies on passive isolation and ambient modes, the Back Bay Audio True actively suppresses external frequencies, creating a quiet bubble even in chaotic environments.
Battery performance is where this product truly shines. With a single charge providing up to five hours of music and a carrying case that extends that to a massive 25 hours, you are looking at days of use before needing to plug in. The QuickCharge feature is also noteworthy; just 15 minutes of charging yields two additional hours of play time. This is ideal for the busy professional or the student who might forget to charge their device overnight but knows they have a long day ahead. The inclusion of Bluetooth 5.4 further enhances the experience by reducing latency to 20 milliseconds. This low-latency connection is essential for anyone playing mobile games or watching videos where audio sync matters, ensuring your lips move in perfect harmony with the sound coming from the speakers.
The design focuses on comfort and modern control, featuring a Bud shape and soft-touch rubberized plastic case. However, because it lacks the specific wingtips found in the Samsung, it relies on the friction of the earbud shape and the ear tip to stay in place. While comfortable for long periods of sitting or walking, those engaging in high-impact sports might find the lack of a physical anchor less secure than the Samsung's winged design. Still, for general use, travel, and media consumption, the combination of ANC, extended battery, and low latency makes this a powerhouse option for the tech-savvy user who values function over brand ecosystems.

If I were buying a pair of earbuds specifically for basketball, I would lean toward the Samsung Galaxy Buds SM-R170. The physical wingtips provide a level of security that is non-negotiable during high-intensity movement, and the splash resistance gives me peace of mind during a sweaty practice. The ability to toggle Ambient Aware is also crucial on the court so I can still hear my teammates calling for the ball. However, if my primary goal was to commute, study, or play mobile games in silence, I would switch to the Back Bay Audio True for its superior battery life and active noise cancellation. Ultimately, the Samsung wins for the athlete, while the Back Bay Audio True wins for the commuter and gamer.
