Sam Menzin

Founder and CEO of Campus Edge Baseball

Sam Menzin is a sports executive, entrepreneur, and baseball advisor whose professional journey reflects a lifelong interest in the strategic side of athletics. Throughout his career, he has combined leadership, analytical thinking, and operational expertise to contribute to organizations across the sports industry. From baseball operations and player acquisition to recruiting services and investment advisory work, he has built a diverse background centered on helping athletes, teams, and organizations achieve meaningful results.

Establishing Campus Edge Baseball

In 2025, Sam founded Campus Edge Baseball, a recruiting and advisory company to assist student-athletes pursuing collegiate opportunities. The organization focuses on providing personalized recruiting guidance while helping players navigate an increasingly competitive landscape.

Since launching the company, he has worked to develop a comprehensive recruiting system that supports athletes throughout the recruiting process. This includes creating customized athlete profiles, building coach and school databases, developing school-matching resources, and implementing recruiting strategy tools designed to improve visibility and communication.

As Chief Executive Officer, Menzin manages a wide range of responsibilities. His leadership extends across marketing, sales, website development, social media strategy, analytics, financial oversight, client onboarding, and NCAA compliance. He also maintains relationships with baseball coaches and showcase organizations nationwide, helping student-athletes gain access to valuable recruiting opportunities.

A strong emphasis on data and technology is central to his approach. Through targeted outreach campaigns, video optimization, and recruiting analytics, he works to maximize athletes' exposure while providing families with practical guidance and support.

Advisory Work and Sports Investments

In addition to leading Campus Edge Baseball, Sam serves as an analyst with Woods Capital and operates SJM Sports as founder and principal. Through these roles, he advises investors, ownership groups, and private equity firms involved in sports-related opportunities.

His advisory work focuses on evaluating sports assets, analyzing operational performance, and helping clients understand strategic opportunities within the industry. Drawing on years of experience inside professional baseball organizations, Menzin provides insights that combine business considerations with practical operational knowledge.

These responsibilities have allowed him to expand his influence beyond athlete recruitment while remaining closely connected to the sports world.

A Passion for Baseball and Analytics

His interest in baseball grew significantly during his teenage years when he discovered the analytical concepts presented in Moneyball. The book introduced him to new ways of thinking about player evaluation, team building, and organizational strategy. That experience inspired a deeper curiosity about how successful baseball organizations make decisions.

His passion for the game continued at Swarthmore College, where he played on the varsity baseball team for four years. During his collegiate career, Sam earned the 2012 Centennial Conference Sportsmanship Award in recognition of his commitment to fair play, respect, and teamwork.

While attending college, Menzin also gained practical experience through the Complete Game Institute. Serving as Assistant Director, he managed the Pitching Biomechanics Facility, coordinated pitching camps, and worked with advanced video technology. These experiences strengthened his understanding of athlete development and performance evaluation.

Building Knowledge Through Internships

Several internships helped shape his professional foundation and provided valuable exposure to different areas of the sports industry.

His experience with the New York Mets included Corporate Sales responsibilities, such as supporting client relationships, assisting with sales initiatives, coordinating corporate activations, and helping manage stadium experiences. The position offered firsthand exposure to the business operations of a professional sports organization.

Sam also completed a two-year internship in Baseball Operations with Turner-Gary Sports. During that time, he became involved in player representation, arbitration preparation, market analysis, and free-agent strategy. Working closely with experienced professionals helped him develop a stronger understanding of contract negotiations and player advocacy. He also contributed to statistical analysis projects and assisted with website development efforts.

In 2012, Menzin joined the Detroit Tigers as a Baseball Operations intern. His responsibilities included supporting salary arbitration preparation, conducting player evaluations, assisting with research on negotiations, and analyzing potential player acquisitions. The opportunity provided an important entry point into professional baseball operations.

Advancement with the Detroit Tigers

His career with the Detroit Tigers spanned 14 years and demonstrated consistent professional growth. Beginning as an intern, Sam advanced through a series of increasingly important positions, including analyst, coordinator, and director, before being promoted to Vice President and Assistant General Manager in 2021.

In this executive position, he oversaw multiple departments throughout the organization, including scouting, player performance, medical operations, and player experience. His work involved numerous aspects of baseball operations, from player acquisitions and contract negotiations to salary arbitration and organizational planning.

Menzin also played a significant role in managing more than $100 million in capital investment initiatives. During periods of organizational transition, he served in key leadership roles that required cross-departmental collaboration and effective communication with stakeholders. His ability to balance strategic planning with operational execution became a defining characteristic of his leadership style.

Academic Achievements

Education has remained an important part of his personal and professional development. Sam earned a Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in Psychology from Swarthmore College. During his undergraduate studies, he also participated in a study abroad program in Rome, Italy, broadening his educational experience and global perspective.

Menzin is currently pursuing an Executive Master of Business Administration at Baruch College's Zicklin School of Business and is expected to graduate in 2027. The program complements his practical experience and supports his continued growth as an executive and entrepreneur.

Raised in Westbury, New York, he attended Friends Academy High School, where he completed his secondary education before beginning his collegiate journey.

Personal Interests and Community Service

Outside of his professional responsibilities, Sam enjoys activities that reflect both his competitive nature and personal interests. His hobbies include running, skiing, biking, yoga, cooking, and chess. Having played chess competitively as a child, he continues to appreciate the strategic thinking the game encourages.

His interests also extend to baseball leadership, scouting, statistical analysis, sports investments, construction projects, and contract negotiations. These subjects align closely with the work he has performed throughout his career.

Community involvement remains an important priority. In 2023, Sam Menzin completed the Detroit Marathon while raising $17,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. He has also volunteered with NOSH Food Kitchen in Glen Cove, New York, and Mission City in Detroit. Through his leadership, professional accomplishments, and dedication to service, he continues to contribute positively to both the sports industry and the communities around him.
