In the cherished echoes of December 2, 2023, Salwan Public School is delighted to recount the profound moments of Samman Diwas 2023 through the pages of this newsletter. Rooted in our school's ethos of 'Service Before Self,' this annual event stands as a beacon of reverence for the Indian Armed Forces and a celebration of noble values that define our community. Samman Diwas 2023 unfolded as a day of tribute and gratitude, dedicated to honoring the gallantry awardees and embracing the families of our valiant martyrs. As we reflect on the ceremony, each moment is a poignant acknowledgment of the sacrifices made and the unwavering commitment displayed by those who have dedicated their lives to the service of our nation.

Beyond the solemnity of military recognition, our celebration extends to the local weavers and artisans, the unsung heroes of our cultural legacy. Samman Diwas provided a platform to display and support their talents, fostering a connection between our school and the rich, diverse heritage we are privileged to uphold. In the spirit of collective responsibility, the day witnessed a significant endeavor – a blood donation camp. Students and community members came together, contributing in a tangible way to the well-being of our soldiers posted at the borders. This act of generosity reinforces our commitment to serve the nation and supporting those who safeguard its borders. As we encapsulate the essence of Samman Diwas 2023 in these pages, let us not only revisit the events but also relive the values learned. It is our hope that this newsletter serves as a vessel, carrying the spirit of gratitude, community, and service that defines Salwan Public School.

Join us in celebrating the vibrant narrative of Samman Diwas 2023 – a day etched in the annals of our school's commitment to excellence, service, and the indomitable spirit of unity.

EDITORIAL

In the heart of Bharat's embrace, warriors stand tall,

Guardians of honour, answering the nation's call.

Through the valleys and mountains, they march,

A symphony of sacrifice, a valorous arch.

In the echoes of courage, our armed forces shine,

Bearing the weight of freedom, a duty divine.

A day with the name Samman Diwas, we bow in deep respect,

A day of homage, our gratitude to reflect.

They are the sentinels of our peaceful nights,

Fighting battles unseen, upholding our rights.

With each step on the border, they carve history,

A saga of bravery, a legacy for you and me.

Samman Diwas, a mosaic of tribute and grace,

Weaving stories of heroes, each one a shining face.

Not just a day, but a profound ode,

To the soldiers who tread where few have strode.

Rakt Dan Shivir, a noble gesture, we share,

A pulsating rhythm of compassion in the air.

Wreaths laid with reverence, a solemn art,

A pledge to remember, etched in every heart.

The widows and mothers, pillars of might,

In their tears, we find the strength to unite.

A cultural fiesta, where artisans gleam,

Their craftsmanship honoured, a vibrant dream.

Samman Diwas, more than an event,

A journey of honor, a lifelong testament.

To the armed forces, a heartfelt cheer,

For every sacrifice, for every tear.

In the symphony of this noble song,

Our respect for warriors, forever strong.

To schools and institutions, let this echo ring,

Embrace a moment to revere, let your reverence sing.

For in these moments of tribute and pride,

Lies the power to inspire, far and wide.

Let the essence of dignity be unfurled,

In every corner, in every corner of the world.

To honour the brave, let your efforts shine,

Adopt a moment to revere, a cause divine.

So, will you join this anthem, this call?

To honour our heroes, to stand tall?

In the symphony of this moment's song,

Will you, too, make the tribute strong?

VERBAL VIGNETTE: REFLECTIONS BY THE PRINCIPAL

Ms. Rashmi Malik, Principal Salwan Public School, Gurugram

Ridhima Gupta, Vice Cultural Captain, and Mahadev Menon, Vice President of the school, engage in an insightful interview with the Principal, Ms Rashmi Malik, to explore the significance and values embodied in the celebrated Samman Diwas 2023 and 27thRakt Dan Shivir. This exclusive conversation offers a glimpse into the profound reflections and broader purpose that shape the ethos of Salwan Public School.

Ridhima: Good morning, ma’am. We are here for your insights on the Samman Diwas celebration. We aim to capture the essence of this grand event for the special edition of the Salwan e-newsletter.

So, ma’am, we would like to sharehow the events of the Samman Diwas 2023 resonated with you personally and what aspects of the celebration do you think made a profound impact on the school community?

Principal Ma’am: Thank you for engaging in this crucial conversation, especially considering its significance for our age group and the future leaders of our country. Samman Diwas holds a special place in my heart.

Mahadev Menon, Vice President, Student Council

Ridhima Gupta,  Editorial Incharge, Student Council

My initial experience attending the event in Rajendra Nagar after joining the Salwan Education Trust left a lasting impression. The palpable excitement among students, teachers, and parents, alongside the presence of dedicated jawans from various units, created a beautiful atmosphere etched in my memory. Witnessing the felicitation of veer naaris was not just a personal reflection but a shared sentiment among the entire audience. While every Indian holds immense respect for the armed forces, events like Samman Diwas provide citizens with a platform to express that respect. It serves as a significant opportunity to acknowledge and display our gratitude to those who ensure our peaceful lives within the comfort of our homes.

Mahadev: Your sentiments align with us, ma’am. Ma’am, as the blood donation camp was a significant part of Samman Diwas, in what ways do you think events like these involve and impact students and the larger community?

Principal Ma’am: The adage goes, "Rakt-dan is Mahadan," emphasizing the profound act of giving a part of oneself to another. This sentiment parallels organ donation, an area still navigating its challenges. However, within the educational community, we recognized the significance of Rakt-dan as a gesture to express respect for the armed forces and their families. Many armed forces personnel endure injuries while safeguarding our nation at the borders, making this act a poignant demonstration of our gratitude. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the parents and staff members of all Salwan schools who consistently participate in our Rakt-dan Shivir year after year. The recent event, our 27th Rakt-danShivir in collaboration with AFTC, was a modest yet meaningful contribution that was graciously accepted, further expressing our respect for the armed forces.

Ridhima: Expressing our gratitude and support for the armed forces is not just a responsibility but a sincere duty. I too believe that the blood donation camp, though modest in scale, stands as a profoundly meaningful contribution from the Salwan family toward this noble cause.

Proceeding further, ma'am, we also observed how the school integrated local weavers and artisans, offering them a platform to exhibit their exceptional skills. How do you think this cultural connection contributes to making the event more meaningful for students like us?

Principal: The entirety of the event, or I should say, all the activities organized in the school, aims to instill sensitivity in the young generation regarding the community and various aspects of life. So, Samman Diwas, along with the addition of the Hunar Mela, represents two sides of the same coin. Essentially, we are guiding you how to respect all these facets. The introduction of Padmashree awardees from rural and tribal areas is a new element we have incorporated into Samman Diwas. This is designed to help you recognize their efforts and art forms. We wanted them to come here, interact with you, highlight their skills, and inspire all of you. The purpose is to teach you that your background does not matter; if you are passionate about something and eager to help people reach greater heights, even if the recognition is not given, the acknowledgment from the community serves as a significant boost. We believe that as you grow up, the seed we have planted in you will drive you to work for the community. Interacting with these artisans and Veer Naaris will leave a lasting impact on you, and wherever you are in the future, we hope you will contribute to the community. That is the primary objective behind these initiatives.

Mahadev: Absolutely, ma'am. Acknowledging our local culture stands as one of the most effective ways to remain connected with our roots and, in turn, contribute to the well-being of the community.

Ma’am, recognizing that not everyone may pursue a career in the Armed Forces, how can individuals, while pursuing their diverse career paths, actively contribute to serving the nation and upholding the values of Samman Diwas in their everyday lives and professional endeavors?

Principal Ma'am: A thoughtful question, Mahadev. We aspire for a fundamental quality within you – the inclination to support and assist others, contributing to the upliftment of humanity. Our hope is that Samman Diwas leaves an indelible mark on your understanding of your own nature and the essence of being human. We anticipate that encountering an armed force person will naturally evoke respect, as you have witnessed the reverence they receive in school. Looking ahead, we eagerly anticipate your contributions to society, wherever your path may lead. Performing your duties in a manner that does not harm others or anything around you is a form of service. Maintain sensitivity towards your actions, ensuring they uplift rather than bring others down. Every thought and action should be a force for growth, recognizing that by helping others rise, you, too, grow in the process.

Ridhima: It is undeniably true that the prosperity of our nation hinges on the collective contribution of each citizen. Our joint efforts to uplift one another play a crucial role.

Lastly, I would like to explore the deeper meanings of events like Samman Diwas 2023. Could you elaborate on the broader purpose of such celebrations within our school's mission and values? Furthermore, as students, how can we ensure the integration of these values into our daily school life while promoting a path of commitment and unity?

Principal Ma'am: At Salwan, we emphasize one value above all others – respect. This extends beyond respecting teachers and support staff; it encompasses all aspects of life. Respect and love are intertwined; you can't genuinely love anything or anyone without first respecting them. Respect precedes love. For instance, if any of you find difficulty with a subject or teacher, challenge yourself to acknowledge and respect their positive qualities. Soon, affection will follow. It's crucial to respect everyone, as disrespecting someone creates inner conflict. The school's motto, 'Service before Self,' underscores the importance of respect in service. Stay humble, express gratitude for those seeking your help, for in helping others, you genuinely help yourself.

Ridhima: Every Salwanian now harbors profound respect in their hearts and will grow up understanding unity in diversity through cultural events like Samman Diwas.

Mahadev: This has been a truly enlightening conversation, ma'am. It will undoubtedly help students grasp the essence of Samman Diwas and inspire them to actively engage in such celebrations to express their respect.

Ridhima: We sincerely appreciate you taking the time to share your insights, ma'am.

UNVEILING THE PURPOSE

In the resonant vibrations of a day entwined with the essence of time, Salwan Public School, Gurugram delights in revisiting the profound episodes within the commemoration of Samman Diwas . Firmly anchored in the bedrock of the institution's principles, defined by the guiding spirit of 'Service Before Self,' this annual observance stands as a radiant beacon, honoring the valor of the Indian Armed Forces and reveling in the noble values that intricately define our closely-knit community.

The celebrations, as depicted in the pages of the newsletter, become a vessel carrying the spirit of gratitude, community, and service. It is a call to action, challenging each one of us to find one’s unique way of serving the nation while pursuing one’s individual passions and professions. The purpose, therefore, becomes a dynamic force—a guiding light that propels the school community towards a shared vision of a better, more service-oriented future.

In unveiling the purpose of Samman Diwas 2023, we invite every student to see beyond the surface, to recognize that service to the nation is a collective responsibility woven into the very fabric of their education and personal growth. It is a purpose that extends far beyond a single event, reverberating in the everyday actions of each student, echoing the values learned and lived within the school's walls. Samman Diwas becomes not just a celebration but a lifelong lesson—a commitment to a purpose larger than oneself.

IDEATION AND CONCEPTUALIZATION

During the stage of ideation and conceptualization, a pivotal decision took shape—an artistic journey that would define the essence of Samman Diwas. The nucleus of this creative endeavor was the deliberate selection of the Chakra theme. It was not a mere coincidence; rather, a thoughtful choice to encapsulate the profound values exemplified by the guardians of the nation donned in uniform.

The Chakra, symbolizing a wheel of cyclical nature, transcended its literal representation to become a powerful metaphor for sacrifice, duty, and honor. Each facet of the Chakra mirrored the virtues embodied by the armed forces—their interconnectedness with nature, the discipline akin to yoga, the valor reminiscent of historical figures like Krishna and Arjun, the resilience echoing through the tales of Ashoka, and the unwavering commitment akin to Abhimanyu. The narrative reached its zenith with Gandhiji’s charkha, symbolizing self-reliance and non-violence.

Amidst this profound background, the creative exploration extended to musical expressions that would enhance the emotional narrative of Samman Diwas. The dance number "I am the Superhero for myself and the world" emerged as a deliberate tribute by the young generation, a poignant expression of gratitude to the soldiers. This dance performance became a canvas for teaching courage and benevolence, as the energetic and youthful participants poured their hearts into each step, creating a visual ode to the bravery and sacrifice of our armed forces.

Simultaneously, the rhythmic composition for the choir and instrumental performance unfolded. A symphony of 26 instruments, seamlessly blending Indian and Western elements, was meticulously conceptualized. The amalgamation of this melodic ensemble with the lyrics "Athithi Devo Bhava" was an artistic endeavor to display our warm-hearted welcome for the sentinels and the awardees. This musical offering was not just a performance; it was an invitation to experience the depth of our respect and hospitality, echoing the sentiment that a guest is indeed a manifestation of the divine.

The addition of an Indian classical dance performance was a deliberate move to highlight respect for the diverse culture of the nation. This cultural expression became a visual representation of the rich heritage that unifies our country in its diversity.

Furthermore, the inclusion of a performance by the parent choir was a strategic choice. It aimed to involve them as stakeholders in the school's narrative, making them an integral part of the event. This participation displayed the school's inclusivity and underscored the idea that Samman Diwas is not just an event for students but a collective celebration involving the entire school community.

Meticulous Preparations

In the heart of Gurugram, where patriotism resonates through the corridors of Salwan Public School Gurugram, unfolds an annual ode to courage — 'Samman Diwas.' Their dedication and creative flair infuse life into each performance, turning the stage into a canvas where movements speak louder than words.

As the preparations for the grand event unfold, the dedicated team of teachers in charge play a pivotal role in shaping the cultural performances of Chakra-The School Ballad. Ms. Manpreet Kaur and Ms. Aishwarya diligently guide the participants, breathing life into the Soldier Act, while Ms. Pooja Kaushik along with Ms Niharika take charge of overseeing the enchanting Nature Act. The Yoga Presentation becomes a graceful symphony under the skillful orchestration of Ms. Sarabjeet Kaur, Ms. Reena, and Ms. Nagender Kaur, each movement reflecting their seasoned guidance.

Moving forward in the narrative, the Krishna-Arjun Act comes to life, thanks to the dedicated monitoring provided by Ms. Neelam Saxena and Ms. Seema Sharma and enactment guidance by Mr Rohan. The Abhimanyu Act unfolds seamlessly under the expertise of Ms. Deepti Vats Sharma and Ms. Monika Thakur, while the Ashoka Act's choreography is executed with finesse, courtesy of Ms. Roshni Braganza and Ms. Ritu. The Gandhi Act, portraying a poignant tale, finds artistic expression through the guidance of Dr. Savita Upadhyay, Ms. Kavita Arya and Ms Minakshi Arora. These teachers in charge are not just observers but active contributors to the unfolding story. Their dedicated guidance and support during practice sessions are crucial, ensuring that participants embrace the choreographers' vision with precision. Backstage, they wear the hat of disciplinarians, ensuring a seamless and disciplined run-through of rehearsals. Their dedication and attention to detail become the unseen threads that weave together artistic expression and disciplined execution, adding layers of depth to the grand presentation of the event.

Practising to make the final picture perfect.

Rehearsals follow, with the choir and orchestra practicing harmonious tunes, creating melodies composed by Dr. Sitaram and crafted by Mr. Kaushik Das, Mr. Virender, Mr. Akshay Kumar that echo through the audience's hearts. The backbone of the musical performances lies in the dedicated teacher in charge, Ms Asha Yadav, Ms Rama Kapur, and Ms Neelima Gulia for the choir and instrumental presentations. Cultural event props are carefully acquired by Ms Shivani Arora, and a myriad of them are crafted with passion and artistic flair by the Art Department, under the guidance of Dr Deepti Jain. A dedicated team of teachers*, led by Ms Shivani Arora, manages the meticulous arrangement of food placards and table layouts, ensuring a delightful dining experience for all the guests. She exhibits her creative flair in designing the costumes for the cultural event and selecting and arranging the gifts for the awardees, AFTC team, Jawans, artisans and invited media personnel. Disciplined rehearsals of the NCC Parade and School Band presentations under the able guidance of Mr Vishal, Mr Dharam Singh, Mr Naresh and Mr Manish turn every note into a salute to the spirit of service. Their tiny footsteps, guided by enthusiasm, weave a narrative of innocence and joy — a tribute from the youngest hearts to the bravest souls. A team of teachers* led by Ms Radha Yadav takes charge of preparing vibrant display boards that narrate the stories of gallantry awardees, artisans, and Veer Naris. These boards become visual timelines, adding depth to the audience's understanding of the sacrifices and courage being celebrated.

Moreover, a specialized team *, led by Dr. Sanjay Kumar and Ms Vaishali Sibal , is diligently preparing to oversee the registration desk. Their responsibilities include verifying the entries of visitors, whether as members of the audience or potential blood donors and expertly directing them to their designated venues. Concomitantly, this team is entrusted with the crucial task of maintaining discipline within the arena, ensuring a seamless and orderly flow of events on the D’ Day.

"Strength Beyond Measure: The Courageous Heart of a Veer Nari"

An air charges with heightened anticipation enveloped the surroundings as the much-awaited enchanting notes of 'Chakra,' the School Ballad echoes, weaving a captivating blend of awe-inspiring moments from our nation’s rich history, pride for our nation and its virtuous culture, thought provoking messages to follow and reverence for our inspiring sentinels in uniform.

The narrative unfolds through the ages, depicting the evolution of the chakra as a symbol of peace, empathy, and courage in human history. The story transpires since long ago, in the vast cosmic wave, a swirling energy storm danced- ' Saurya Mandal’, a cosmic ballet birthing our home. Life's essence thrived there, guided by seven chakras, ethereal centers harmonizing existence. Through the ages, these chakras shaped human history. In another era, known as Dwapar Yug, amid Lord Krishna's presence, the Sudarshan Chakra emerged, embodying courage against darkness. Passed to the skilled warriors Arjuna and his son Abhimanyu, it unraveled the Chakravyuha, revealing strategy and valour. Beyond epochs, the chakra evolved into a symbol of peace, empathy, and benevolence. In Ashoka's enlightened era, with the new definition, it transformed into the ‘Dhamma Chakra’, embodying moral law. During modern Bharat, Mahatma Gandhi, the epitome of non-violence, adopted the chakra in the form of spinning wheel, ‘the Charkha,’ symbolizing work for a greater purpose and independence. After we achieve independence, the chakra graces Bharat’s pride, Tiranga, symbolizing 24 virtues to be adopted by each citizen. Worn proudly by gallantry awardees, Chakra signifies courage, peace, and national pride—enduring importance in human history. The Ballad impactfully conveys the significance of Chakra since the time immemorial. And hence Bharat's higher gallantry awards are named after Chakra.
