Respect, Reciprocity, Responsibility
The Three R's: respect, reciprocity and responsibility are three tenets of Indigenous research ethics to ensure each scholar interrogates their methods to ensure the outcomes of research serve rather than do harm to Indigenous communities. Similarly, maintaining these three principles are essential in a classroom environment to establish a safe and inclusive learning environment.
Árdna- Sámi cultural center, translates to "hidden treasure" in North Sámi. The circular structure of the bench around the fire acts as both an equalizer and conversation starter.
It is very important to me as an instructor as well as to the success of my students that everyone feels heard and respected in my classroom. I do not tolerate any form of discrimination or hate speech in my classroom.

*Note: We will be discussing a number of mature topics and sensitive subject matter. If there is anything that you have a question about or if something makes you uncomfortable, please contact me right away. Our first session on the Nordic Noir will have the most mature content in terms of violent and sexual subject matter as is part of the genre. You can skip this first session if you like.
There is never simply a unilateral transmission of knowledge from instructor to student. I recognize that each of my students brings with them their own knowledge and experience. I encourage students' to share their knowledge and unique skill sets though class discussion.
A large portion of our class will be about discussing the literary works and connecting them to their social context as well as to our own in the present.
Establishing clear lines of communication and classroom expectations is essential for students to understand from the beginning of the term what my responsibilities are as the instructor and theirs as students.
I will post all of the classroom materials on the site. I will include optional readings and other sources to help deepen your knowledge and add to our discussion in addition to the main text. I ask that you please read the main text at least and come prepared to discuss.
