Sami Azam is currently the Senior Lecturer and the Undergraduate Course Coordinator at the College of Engineering, IT and Environment at Charles Darwin University. He has more than 10 years of teaching experience where he implemented several innovative learning and teaching practices. He is the recipient of several awards for his outstanding contributions to learning and teaching. He holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering and his PhD research was on the detection of binaural processing in the human brain.


Dr Azam has been constantly producing high-quality research and scholarly works at both national and international conferences as well as journals. The body of works comprises scholarly journal articles and conference proceedings as well as book chapters. He is very active in conducting multidisciplinary research. His research expertise includes machine learning, artificial intelligence, deep learning, advanced signal processing and image analysis. Applications include the classification, detection and modelling of a biosignals, such as electroencephalogram (EEG), electrocardiogram (ECG), and acceleration plethysmogram (APG) as well as medical image analysis for cancer detection and early diagnosis of diabetic and cardiovascular disease. He has also applied machine learning and other artificial intelligence techniques to detect and classify a range of data security and IoT threats. He is a key member of the Biomedical Engineering and Health Informatics research group at Charles Darwin University and is a long-term resident of the Northern Territory.


Dr Azam has successfully secured competitive grants of more than A$300,000 from external agencies and A$ 77,500 internally from CDU. He has also been a presenter in workshops and seminars on state-of-the-art research ideas and grant propositions and served as a program committee member for various conferences.


Dr Azam took leadership in organizing Charles Darwin University’s largest community event, the IT Code Fair since 2014. IT Code Fair so far is the leading community engagement which brought enormous benefits to stakeholders such as CDU IT students, CDU staff, high school students, school teacher, ICT industries and the NT government. He is an active member of several professional organisations: AISA, AAEE, ACS and IEEE and currently working as IEEE NT Student Activities Chair.

He is also working as an advisor for the BSA-CDU (Bangladesh Student Association - CDU) and the NANT (Nepalese Association of Northern Territory) to serve the Bangladeshi and Nepalese student community.
