Some culture differences I have learned about while working on the culture portfolio were mainly related to education and literature. Spanish culture is more intimate, emotional, and deep-rooted, making their literature much more in touch and relatable for others. While American culture is unique, aiming for individualism, making our literature different in each way, including being more modernistic.
In Spanish education, teachers move from class to class and are usually called by their first names. The relationship between teacher and student is more personal and heartwarming. In American education, the students move from class to class, and the teacher-student relationship is formal and short. One similarity I have noticed is the passion Spanish and American writers have for their novels, poetry, short stories, etc. Everyone can come together and appreciate the beauty in each piece, even with cultural differences. Different cultures also learn from each other and gain inspiration from others.
For my cultural portfolio, I targeted a theme. I centered around education, literature, and films because I am studying them in college. I am an English Literature major with a Creative Writing and Journalism minor. I love reading and writing, especially learning about literature coming from different countries. I learn something new in literature and film from different countries' cultures, and it's an extremely beautiful concept. Some of my goals in life have changed since learning about Spanish literature stemming from their culture.
