As a computer science major and a member of the Public Leadership Scholars program at Maryland I strive for excellence in both my academics and my extracurricular activities. College Park Scholars is a two year, living and learning program on campus. The Public Leadership cohort focuses on developing leadership skills for every day life as well as for the betterment of the public. Looking forward I hope to combine these skills from Public Leadership with my skills in computer science. As a computer science major I love problem solving and collaboration, two skills that go hand in hand with productive leadership. I hope to utilize these skills in the future either with an internship, on-campus activities and just my daily tasks. I am a eager and motivated student who has just begun her journey to many more amazing things.
This past summer I took part in the Cisco High STEM Externship program where this Capstone Project won me second place in our competition. Through working on this project I learned quite a bit about presentation and sales skills, collaboration, and innovation. This project reflects my ability to produce visually and intuitively appealing ideas on a time restriction and with an unprecedented group of people.
Reflected Best Self
I felt that I was at my best during my junior year of high school. This was the period of my life in my most recent memory where I was most focused and motivated to succeed in my academics and extracurricular. During this school year I felt that I performed to the best of my abilities and demonstrated to myself that I was capable of so much more than I expected. I often use this time of my life as a reference for motivation when I doubt my abilities.Another time where I felt that I was at my best was when I was volunteering as a community tutor for my local school system. I often worked with kids who both struggled in their classes and didn't have access to outside resources. By participating in the program I learned how much I could help the people around me with very little effort. It became aware to me how accessible kindness and generosity is.
Through my experience with the Public Leadership program at The University of Maryland, we have often completed assignments for the purpose of reflecting and improving upon ourselves. Her is just one example of how this program helps me retreat and reflect on when I felt my best. As evident in the excerpt, I work frequently as a tutor in my community to help struggling kids with their school work. This activity is something I am truly passionate about and is my own way of offering my best self to my community.
