Samantha Scoggins grew up in Gardner Kansas, and her love for singing started at a very young age. When she was eight, her parents placed her in voice lessons, and since then, she has participated in as many musical extracurriculars as she could. For example, in middle school, she took part in before-school choir and Kansas State Choir all four years. Then, when she reached high school, she continued to partake in Kansas State Choir all four years, as well as solo and ensemble festival and her school's musicals. On top of school, she has also taken voice lessons with Deborah Green. Her proudest moment was when she became the first person in her high school to make it into the NAfME National Choir her junior year, but she is also quite happy about her consistent "I" ratings at regional and state solo and ensemble festival and her consecutive eight years of KMEA. Sam is currently seeking a Bachelor's in Vocal Performance at Wichita State University under the instruction of Alan Held, and she is continuing to take advantage of operatic opportunities given to her, including Opera Scenes, the Autumn Arias concert, and even getting to play Vera Boronel in The Consul.
Over the last four years, I have participated in District, State, and National Choirs, my high school's musicals, as well as my own personal repertoire with a private teacher. Thanks to all of these opportunities and more, I have developed three main musical values, including personal improvement, professionalism, and connection. Since I am still a young musician, I know that there is a lot left for me to learn. While the thought can be daunting, I enjoy taking the time to solidify my knowledge in the practice rooms or by looking up more information online. Another thing that I try to keep up with is professionalism. Throughout my education, I have always done my best to get any work assigned to me done on time, keep up with long-term projects, and communicating with peers or professors whenever I am struggling. These practices have greatly helped me make the most of my education, and I plan to continue them going forward. Finally, I hope to create a connection with the music I perform. I find nothing more rewarding than being able to express a piece in a way that an audience both understands and enjoys, and I want to do my best to consistently deliver performances like this.
