Per the website, Shared Hope International, Sex Trafficking occurs when someone uses force, fraud or coercion to cause a commercial sex act with an adult or causes a minor to commit a commercial sex act. A commercial sex act includes prostitution, pornography, and sexual performance done in exchange for any item of value, such as money, drugs, shelter, food or clothing. The common age that a child enters sex trafficking is 14-16 years old. Do you remember being that age and how naive you were? Now think about the world we live in today where social media is king and privacy is almost non-existent. Our young people face a barrage of images and rhetoric about self image and sexuality that most adults cant make sense of. It is estimated that there are between 200-300 victims of sex trafficking in Maine. Currently per, Shared Hope International, Maine scored a "D" in responding to sex trafficking. We need to deal head on with the demand for sex-trafficking and make sure resources are available for those identified as victims. Currently some victims of sex-trafficking get arrested for prostitution and drug possession. There is no mechanism in place to identify how they got into prostitution or drugs. We need to look at the bigger picture and try to stop the cycle of abuse.
