In the first six weeks of joining Salem Ukulele Magic, beginner members will learn how to hold the ukulele, strum the ukulele, read chord diagrams, and transition from one chord to another. The first chords that members learn are the C, F, G, D, A, G7, and Am chords. The group has leveled off at a high beginner level, but every new beginner is encouraged to just play at their own pace.

On this website, you will find videos of beginner lessons, audio recordings of the songs in the music folder, and play alongs. Also, there are many songs within our music folder that only use 2-3 chords. These beginner songs allow members to practice chord formation and transitioning from one chord to another while playing fun and familiar music. Just play a few songs each night, and you will see progress within a week. Just expect your songs to be slow at first, since transitions from chord to chord can be a tricky skill to learn. Salem Ukulele Magic Equipment
Every member needs a ukulele. (Be sure you don't buy a toy.)
You will need a folder or binder to store your music.
Every member will need a foldable music stand.
Also, bring a pen or pencil to mark up the song sheets with notes.

This video is great for reading chord charts, but please do not strum with your thumb. It limits your strumming choices in the future, and it is difficult to change your strum, once you have started with your thumb.
This video does a pretty good job of showing you how to be efficient when you move your fingers from G to C and G to F.
