In the first six weeks of joining Salem Ukulele Magic, members will learn how to hold the ukulele, strum the ukulele, read chord diagrams, and transition from one chord to another. The first chords I teach are the C, F, G, D, A, G7, and Am chords. There are songs within the music folder we have that only use a few chords at a time from that original 7 chords. These songs allow members to practice transitioning from one chord to another while playing fun and familiar music.  

Do not expect to be able to sing and play at the same time at first.  Those that can sing, wlll sing, to keep us together. However, your first job is to learn the chords and develop muscle memory to transition from one chord to another without having to look. This takes time and practice, but not too long. The great thing about the ukulele is that it is relatively easy to learn enough to sing and play familiar songs.

Once members have learned the first 7 chords and the transitions from one chord to another, they should be able to play most of the songs in our music folder. Until then, just play the chords you can. At home, practice 2-3 chords a week, transitioning from one to the other. It usually takes about a month to learn most of the chords and how to transition slowly from one to the other. Don't get frustrated. Every ukulele player learns at their own speed. The goal of this club is to keep the music relatively easy, making playing and singing together more fun. 

*** You will need a folder or binder to store your music. 

Also, bring a pen or pencil to mark up the song sheets with notes.
