Dr. Sakinat Folorunso is an Associate Professor of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Nigeria, specializing in Artificial Intelligence Systems, Machine Learning and it's applications, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and FAIR Data governance.
Her research integrates federated learning, explainable AI, and multilingual NLP with applications in digital health, cultural analytics, and data stewardship. She has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications, with international recognition for her work in healthcare AI, indigenous language technologies, and responsible data infrastructures.
Dr. Folorunso has led and co-led several competitive grants funded by Google (GARA, exploreCSR), the Royal Academy of Engineering (HEP-SSA, UK), and TETFUND, Nigeria, contributing to AI education, cultural data digitization, and equitable access to machine learning tools across Africa.
She serves as the Founder of The Route to AI Learning (TRAIL) — a diversity-focused on-campus initiative promoting inclusion in AI education — and has been recognized as a Grace Hopper Faculty Scholar, WiML Scholar, and Regular Associate of the ICTP (Italy). Her ongoing work bridges research, education, and innovation to ensure that AI systems reflect cultural diversity, data fairness, and social good.
