Independent Bangladesh 2.0 and Achievements of the Ongoing Anti-Discrimination Movement: A Step Towards Building a New Bangladesh

I am writing about a crucial step in creating a new Bangladesh—overcoming existing disparities between public and private spheres. This is a topic I have long wanted to address, and I believe now is the perfect time.

The level of inequality between the public and private sectors in our country and society is laughable by modern global standards. Let me begin with my personal example. I was a reasonably good student in school and college. After college, I started preparing for medical school. However, due to a combination of personal negligence, bad luck, and perhaps fate, I didn’t get into a public medical school. While my family could afford it, I didn’t want to pressure my father, so I didn’t opt for a private medical college.

Instead, I heard about Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology, a private institution that was highly reputed for engineering at the time. Back then, just having a GPA of 5 in both SSC and HSC was enough for admission. I pursued a BSc in Civil Engineering there. I performed exceptionally well, securing 3rd place in the department among 141 students. I also received merit-based scholarships every semester for my good results.

Some may think, "Third place in a private university? What’s the big deal?" But those familiar with Ahsanullah University will understand that this is no small feat. Later, I joined a private university as a faculty member and also pursued an MSc at AIT, Thailand, on the Royal Thai King’s Scholarship. Competing with students from various countries, I graduated at the top of my class and received a Graduation Award.

Am I boasting? Not at all. I am sharing this to highlight the background of students like me and countless others from private universities.

From my university days to every stage of my career, I have faced subtle and overt discrimination. Whether it was through words, gestures, social norms, familial biases, or institutional practices, I encountered prejudice rooted in our long-standing culture of public-private discrimination.

No matter how talented a private university graduate may be, they are often denied opportunities in public institutions. Their CVs are rarely forwarded, and even an MIT PhD holder can be dismissed as a "private tag" candidate. In stark contrast, we frequently hear of irregularities and corruption in public university hiring. Interestingly, global university rankings reveal that some Bangladeshi private universities have outperformed their public counterparts—a trend that promises to grow.

For example, leading private universities often require a North American master’s degree to qualify as a lecturer, whereas public universities allow top-tier undergraduates to secure positions directly. This disparity isn’t limited to academia. It extends to job markets, where public-sector employees often belittle their private-sector counterparts despite the fact that nearly everyone begins their career in the private sector.

Mark my words: If good governance is established, people will increasingly prefer private jobs over public ones.

My aim is not to belittle public universities or their students but to highlight these disparities so that we can discard such narrow-mindedness and build a truly inclusive Bangladesh. The recent student movement showcased this potential. While the protests began at Dhaka University, students from various private universities played critical roles on the frontlines. Despite having no student unions or political affiliations, they showed remarkable courage and leadership.

Let us move beyond these divisions and eliminate discrimination from the Bangladesh of tomorrow. Recruitment should be based on merit, not institutional labels. Judge students by their knowledge and wisdom, not by whether they attended a public or private institution.

স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশ ২.০ এবং চলমান বৈষম্যবিরোধী আন্দোলনের অর্জন, নতুন বাংলাদেশ বিনির্মাণের পথের একটি ধাপ নিয়ে লিখছি। এটি নিয়ে আমার দীর্ঘ দিনের লেখার ইচ্ছে ছিল এবং আমার মনে হয় এখনি সবচেয়ে উৎকৃষ্ট সময়।

আমাদের দেশ ও সমাজে পাবলিক ও প্রাইভেট এর মধ্যে যে পরিমাণ বৈষম্য বিদ্যমান তা আধুনিক বিশ্বে হাস্যকর। আমি আমার জীবনের উদাহরণ দিয়ে শুরু করছি। আমি স্কুল কলেজে বেশ ভালই ছাত্র ছিলাম। কলেজ শেষে মেডিকেল এর জন্যে প্রস্তুতি নিতে শুরু করি এবং নিজের খামখেয়ালি বা ফাকিবাজি বা ভাগ্য সুপ্রসন্ন না হওয়া, সবকিছু মিলিয়ে সরকারী মেডিকেলে সুযোগ হইনি। সামর্থ্য ছিলনা তা না, বাবার উপর প্রেশার দিতে চাইনি দেখে প্রাইভেট মেডিকেলে গেলাম না। তখন শুনতে পেলাম আহসানুল্লাহ ইউনিভার্সিটির কথা, যেটা প্রাইভেট হলেও ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং এর জন্যে অনেক ভাল এবং আমাদের সময় শুধু মাত্র SSC ও HSC তে GPA 5 থাকলেই ভর্তি হওয়া যেতো। তো ওখান থেকেই BSc করা সিভিলে। রেজাল্ট খুবই ভালো হলো এবং মেধাতালিকায় বিভাগে ৩য় স্থান পাই (১৪১ জনের মধ্যে)। এছাড়া প্রতি সেমিস্টারে ভালো রেজাল্টের জন্যেতো বৃত্তি পেতামই। অনেকে ভাবতে পারে প্রাইভেট এর ৩য়, ও আর এমন কি? কিন্তু যারা আহসানুল্লাহ চিনে তারা বুঝবে বেপারটা মোটেও তেমন না। এরপরতো একটি প্রাইভেট ইউনিভার্সিটিতে শিক্ষকতায় আছি। মাঝে AIT, Thailand থেকে MSc করে আসি Royal Thai King’s Scholarship নিয়ে। ওখানে আমার প্রতিযোগিতা শুধু বাংলাদেশী না বিভিন্ন দেশের শিক্ষার্থীদের সাথে ছিল। আল্লাহর রহমতে ওখানেও বেশ কৃতিত্বের সাথে ক্লাসে ১ম স্থান নিয়ে Graduation Award পাই। অনেকে ভাবতে পারে আমি নিজের সুনাম করছি? আমি আসলে আমার বা আমার মত বহু প্রাইভেট ইউনিভার্সিটির ছাত্রের প্রেক্ষাপট তুলে ধরছি।

আমাকে  ইউনিভার্সিটি জীবন থেকে শুরু করে প্রতিটা ক্ষেত্রে হীনমন্যতার বা বৈষম্যের স্বীকার হতে হয়েছে। সেটা কথা বার্তা, আকার ইঙ্গিত, চলাফেরা, সামাজিক, পারিবারিক, প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক সব কিছুতে, প্রত্যক্ষ বা প্রচ্ছন্ন ভাবে। আমাদের দেশের দীর্ঘদিনের কালচার এটা। পাবলিক প্রাইভেট বৈষম্য।

একটি প্রাইভেট ইউনিভার্সিটির ছাত্র যতই মেধাবী হোক, সে কখনও পাবলিকে শিক্ষক হতে পারাতো দুরের কথা তার সিভিই ফরওয়ার্ড হয়না। সে যদি MIT থেকেও PhD করে আসে তাও তাকে প্রাইভেট ট্যাগ দিয়ে দমিয়ে দেয়া হবে। যেখানে পাবলিক ইউনিভার্সিটির নিয়োগের অনিয়ম ও দুর্নীতির খবর আমরা প্রায় দেখতে পাই। বর্তমান ওয়ার্ল্ড ওয়াইড ইউনিভার্সিটি রেঙ্কিং এ যেখানে আমরা দেখতে পাই, বাংলাদেশের পাবলিক ইউনিভার্সিটির সাথে পাল্লা দিয়ে, এমনকি টপকিয়ে প্রাইভেট ইউনিভার্সিটি ভাল করেছে যা সামনে আরও চমক দিবে। বেশ কিছু প্রথম সারির প্রাইভেট ইউনিভার্সিটিতে লেকচারার হতে মিনিমাম যোগ্যতা নর্থ আমেরিকান মাস্টার্স লাগে, যেখানে পাবলিকে প্রথম দিকের ছাত্ররা সরাসরি সুযোগ পায় বিএসসি করে।

শুধু এখানেই নয়, জব এর বেলায় পাবলিক প্রাইভেট এ চরম বৈষম্য। আমি বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্রে পাবলিক জব হোল্ডারদের দ্বারা প্রাইভেটের প্রতি তুচ্ছ তাচ্ছিল্য বা সুপেরিওরিটি খাটানো দেখেছি, যেখানে বলা যায় সবারই প্রথম চাকরি শুরু হয় প্রাইভেট দিয়ে। Mark my words, সামনে মানুষ পাবলিক ছেড়ে প্রাইভেট জবে ঝুঁকবে যদি সুশাসন প্রতিষ্ঠা হয়।

আমার উদ্দেশ্য পাবলিককে ছোট করা নয়। বরং আঙ্গুল দিয়ে আমাদের বৈষম্য দেখিয়ে দেয়া যাতে আমরা নতুন বাংলাদেশ গড়তে পারি এসব সঙ্কীর্ণতাকে ছুড়ে ফেলে। আমরা নিজেরা দেখেছি, এবাররের ছাত্র আন্দোলনে প্রাইভেট ইউনিভার্সিটির শিক্ষার্থীরা কিভাবে ফ্রন্টলাইনে ভুমিকা রেখেছে যেখানে কোন ছাত্র সংসদ বা ছাত্র রাজনীতি কোনটাই নেই। শুরুটা ঢাকা ইউনিভার্সিটিতে হলেও পুরো আন্দোলনে মাঠে সরব উপস্থিতি এবং বুক পেতে লড়েছে বিভিন্ন প্রাইভেট ইউনিভার্সিটির শিক্ষার্থীরা।

আসুন ভেদাভেদ ভুলে আগামির বাংলাদেশ থেকে এই বৈষম্য ছুড়ে ফেলে দিই। সকল প্রকার নিয়োগ হোক মেধার ভিত্তিতে। একজন শিক্ষার্থীকে তার প্রতিষ্ঠান পাবলিক না প্রাইভেট তা না দেখে তাকে জাজ করি তার জ্ঞান ও প্রজ্ঞা দিয়ে।
