Personal & Academic Statement – Saifullah Khan
I hail from the beautiful valley of Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. My academic journey began with a strong foundation in Microbiology, where I earned my Bachelor’s degree and conducted research on the "Isolation and Characterisation of Heavy Metal-Degrading Microbes from Peach Orchards in District Swat." This study allowed me to explore the intersection of environmental pollution and microbial remediation.
Following this, I pursued an MPhil in Microbiology, during which my research focused on biological control agents. The title of my thesis was "Isolation and Characterisation of Rhizospheric and Endophytic Bacteria of Berberis lycium and Their Screening Against Plant Fungal Pathogens." This work deepened my understanding of sustainable agriculture and the vital role microbes play in plant health and disease resistance.
In parallel with my scientific interests, I have always been passionate about physical education and sports. I completed a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Science and Physical Education from Sarhad University of Information Technology. My commitment to fitness and youth development led to my appointment as a Physical Education Teacher (PET) in the Education Department, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In this role, I am responsible for:
Planning and delivering physical education lessons that promote student health, discipline, and teamwork
Organizing intra-school and inter-school sports events and competitions
Identifying and training talented athletes
Promoting the importance of physical activity for mental and physical well-being among students
Collaborating with school administration to ensure the integration of health and sports into the curriculum
In addition to my role as a teacher, I also serve as the Laboratory Incharge at Khyber Hospital, Saidu Sharif, Swat, where I am entrusted with the complete responsibility of managing the laboratory. My duties include:
Conducting routine and specialised diagnostic laboratory tests
Ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and timely delivery of lab reports
Maintaining and calibrating laboratory instruments
Managing laboratory inventory and quality control procedures
Assisting in clinical diagnoses and supporting physicians with laboratory data
Currently, I have returned to the University of Swat to begin my PhD, where my research is centered on the synthesis and application of nanoparticles. I am particularly interested in evaluating their antimicrobial activity against human and plant pathogens, in response to the growing global concern of antibiotic resistance. This cutting-edge work aims to explore nanotechnology-based alternatives for microbial control.
Beyond academics and professional responsibilities, I am an avid runner and enjoy early morning runs along Lake Michigan during my travels. I also have a passion for exploring new cultures and countries. I believe in lifelong learning, embracing diversity, and contributing to society through both science and education.
