Phase 2: Touchless Washing Stations

Leia is a Girl Scout Cadette and is working on her Silver Award. The Silver Award is a the highest award a girl in the 6th, 7th or 8th grade can receive. Leia will be completing a community take action project on the Navajo Reservation to build 10-20 handwashing stations for residents with no running water. She will log over 50 hours over the next 8 months. Follow her journey below.

The Application Review Process

We send our application to her advisor and is approved. Her advisor gives her an updated budget for the Tippy Taps and then she sends it to the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona Review team. The team reviews her fundraising plans and makes sure that she is following guidelines. She trims down her budget and fundraising and gets her approval! She begins with her project this week.

The Silver Award Application

Leia spent a whole week working on her application. We worked on finding an advisor and getting our application in order. The application had items from completing a Leadership Journey to creating a budget and fundraising plan.
She would write and then edit and then review her work with her dad.

Creating a Funding Stream

Leia designed a logo for her project in Phase 1. She used that logo to create a water bottle safe sticker. Each sticker helps her raise $1 for her project. Any additional donated funds go to make the touchless water station.

Stickers are mailed out

The stickers are being mailed out everyday to get to her supporters. You can buy more than one for your friends. Share the story of helping people and how Navajo Sage helps build immunity and clears respiratory systems.

Pandemic Sidetrack

Leia wasn't able to move forward for several reasons from November- February. The grounds froze and would not help with a tippy tap because their water would freeze in the jugs. The Begay Girls decided to donate the rest of their items to donation drives here in Tucson to help them stay safe.

2021 Cookie Season

Leia makes the community aware of her goals to help the Navajo Nation and raises money by selling 400 boxes of cookies to help her troop to continue to do good in the world.

Build Day 1

Leia and her Girl Scout sisters were able to build 4 Tippy Taps while earning their Wood Working badge.
The girls worked for 4 hours to make 4 Tippy Taps for delivery to the Navajo Reservation.

Easier the second time around

Leia and her crew were much more comfortable using tools the second time around. They quickly knew how to start their process with hammering the pipes.

Girls using tools

One of the best parts of the this build was the enthusiasm that the girls had to use hammers, nails and following the build instructions. The girls who participated were excited to be able to feel safe in an 'all girl' environment.

Deliveries

We were able to deliver and demonstrate the Tippy Taps to people around the Navajo Reservation.

Rural

Some of the deliveries took hours to arrive at. The families were grateful for the tutorials and the work that went into building these handwashing stations.

Education

Leia took time at each home to show the people how to use the Tippy Taps. Residents were grateful that the Tippy Taps used minimal water and would allow them to wash their hands safely. Some families were excited to make their own Tippy Taps.
