Safe Streets MAMARONECK

Community call to action

On June 20, 2024, our community suffered a heart-wrenching tragedy. A kindergarten-age boy and his mother lost their lives while walking to Mamaroneck Avenue School. This devastating event has left us heartbroken and underscores the urgent need for enhanced pedestrian safety measures to protect our children and families.

We must act now. We are a group of families uniting to make dangerous streets safer. We invite everyone to join us.

We received the Village and County Plan to make Mamaroneck Ave a safe street for families in early August. We're grateful for the transparency and swift action from our local government leaders. We're just not sure they understood the assignment. We asked for a comprehensive plan (below) with meaningful safety measures beyond basic manintenance. The plan has a lot of basic maintenance and new signs, but only 1 of 8 requested pedestrian-only traffic lights at intersections by the school, and no plan whatsoever for starting the process to redesign Mamaroneck Ave into a neighborhood street.

TLDR: The plan is a start, but it's a weak start.

Here is the Report Card for that plan from Safe Streets Mamaroneck. We'd hoped for a lot more GREEN.
