Safe & Balanced Screen Time in Schools

Standing together we can effect change to make a difference for our kids

Created by: Elmbrook School District Parents

OUR PURPOSE

This site gives ELMBROOK SCHOOL DISTRICT PARENTS a place to voice concerns and ideas about school-provided technology. Our calendar has upcoming events when parents can use their power to effect change in public school technology policies at school board meetings, with community stakeholders, and with state representatives.

Under the articles & research tab you'll find links that inform about many kinds of risks to kids from excessive screen time and unsafe online environments. Please educate yourself on emerging research that may be new to you, as well as points of view that you may not have considered previously.

Please feel free to add a personal story of your experiences with school-provided technology, or your thoughts on any articles and research, if you like. You may do so by adding a comment under the comment section tab.

We are standing together to partner with our school district's administration and board of education members to launch safe & balanced screen time in schools which reflects the way our kids use technology at school.

EXPERT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SCREEN TIME

***DR. CHARLES FAY'S PERSONAL ENDORSEMENT TOWARDS OUR INITIATIVE:

Dear Wendy,

Thanks for your concern regarding the overuse of technology in the classroom. It is true that learning takes place far more effectively when there exists authentic human interaction between the educator and the learner. I also share your concern regarding how addictive these devices become and the difficulty teachers have over monitoring the content being accessed.

Our institute's position is that technology should be used in the classroom only when absolutely necessary. Again, real teaching happens when educators engage students in meaningful conversation, dialog and mutual problem-solving. This can't happen when students are spending much of their time viewing screens.

Best wishes,

Charles Fay, Ph.D,
