The Doctoral Defence is a festive event in Finland. Therefore, I want to share the story and pictures from my Doctoral Defence.
Prior to the formal defence, the doctoral thesis undergoes a thorough evaluation by two external reviewers. Once these reviewers express satisfaction with the revisions made, the thesis is published and the date for the formal defence is established. During the formal defence, a distinguished opponent assesses the doctoral candidate's understanding and expertise in their field of research. This examination takes the form of a dialogue that systematically explores the contents of the thesis, challenging the candidate's knowledge and pushing the boundaries of their understanding. The formal defence ceremony is a festive occasion, encompassing unique traditions and formalities that add to its significance.
After a successful doctoral defence, cake is served outside the lecture hall to celebrate the achievement.
A formal dinner is organized to pay tribute to the esteemed opponent, primarily attended by academic colleagues with whom the candidate has collaborated. While a few immediate family members may be invited, it is customary for them not to have a speech at the gathering. Towards the end of the dinner, a series of speeches takes place in a predetermined sequence, beginning with the doctoral candidate and progressing according to the guests mentioned by the candidate in their speech.
While the formal dinner continues, an after-party commences at a separate venue where friends, colleagues, and extended family gather. Guests enjoy food while awaiting the arrival of the doctoral candidate. This informal celebration features a diverse program that may include music, speeches, dancing, and quality time spent together.
In Finland, doctors have the privilege of wearing the Finnish Doctoral hat and sword. The hat is meticulously crafted from silk and custom-fitted using a special technique to perfectly match the individual's head measurements. Below, I present pictures of my husband in this distinguished attire.
The formal right to bear the hat and the sword is granted when the doctor is promoted at a special festive event along with all the doctors who graduated that year. Because of covid and moving abroad, both my husband and I are still looking forward to our doctoral promotion.
♪ These are the days I will remember.
