Happiness and health lie at the heart of our well-being. My research revolves around the question: how can we nurture and enhance both health and happiness through individual agency, healthcare practices, and societal initiatives? I am Säde Stenlund, a Finnish Physician specializing in health care planning and management. I believe that by fostering and advancing the positive aspects of happiness and health, we can bolster resilience and elevate overall well-being. Through cross-disciplinary collaborations, my work delves into these inquiries, exploring their implications at both individual and healthcare system levels.
The results of my doctoral thesis in public health can serve as a motivator for cultivating a healthy lifestyle that fosters long-term happiness. Through a study involving 10,000 working-aged Finns, we observed significant associations between positive changes in health behavior and increased levels of happiness over a span of nine years. Furthermore, the findings also indicate a potential reciprocal relationship, whereby happiness may contribute to the adoption of better health behaviors.
My research is rooted in a salutogenic framework, which aims to improve health amidst adversity by emphasizing the factors that produce health rather than what causes disease. Within this salutogenic paradigm, my research objectives encompass the domains of happiness, health behavior, and protecting the microbiome.
As a medical professional, I have gained experience in various healthcare settings, including general practice, numerous emergency facilities, a prison, and surgical departments. In addition to my clinical and research work, I have gained training in healthcare planning and management, completing relevant courses and practical assignments. Presently, I hold a postdoctoral position at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
