Mathematics was one of the first subjects taught at Stockholm University College when it was first founded in 1878, and the first professor at the university was Gösta Mittag-Leffler, in mathematics. The first female professor of mathematics, and Sweden's first female professor of any subject, was Sonja Kovalevsky (1850-91), at Stockholm University.
In 1929 the Institute of Insurance Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics was founded to benefit insurance mathematics in Sweden. The institute is now part of the Division of Mathematical Statistics. Its first research leader was professor Harald Cramér.
