I joined SPT Services Sdn. Bhd. as an intern in the QHSSE (Quality, Health, Safety, Security & Environment) Department, where I had the opportunity to apply my academic knowledge in a real-world port and terminal setting. My role primarily involved assisting with safety documentation, compliance monitoring, and incident reporting to support operational integrity and ensure adherence to regulatory and ISO standards. Through this hands-on experience, I gained exposure to workplace safety protocols, audit procedures, and reporting systems essential to maintaining a safe and secure work environment.
I officially reported for duty on 17th February 2025 to begin my industrial training at SPTS Services Sdn. Bhd.. On my first day, I collected my Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as a coverall and safety boots from the Human Resource & Administration (HRA) Department. After that, I was introduced to all departments within the company to familiarize myself with the organizational structure and operations. I was then placed under the QHSSE Department, specifically in the Quality Unit. However, throughout the training, I was also given the opportunity to openly assist and learn from the HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) Unit, which broadened my exposure to various aspects of workplace safety and compliance. On the second day, I attended a comprehensive Safety Induction Program, which provided essential knowledge on the company’s safety procedures, emergency protocols, and general site rules. This ensured I was well-prepared to perform my duties safely and responsibly.
Experienced & Knowledge
During my 24-week industrial training at SPTS Services Sdn. Bhd., I worked in the QHSSE Department and did a lot of important tasks that helped me grow both personally and professionally. My main duties were to help with internal audits, review and format Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), make monthly awareness videos, and run safety campaigns. I was also given a small project to use Microsoft Power Automate to digitise the company's Non-Conformity Report (NCR) tracking system. Along with these main tasks, I was able to take part in emergency drills directly. At first, I was a time checker, making sure that responses were quick during practice emergencies. Later, I joined the Emergency Response Team (ERT), where I learnt how to handle crises in real life. These hands-on experiences helped me understand real-time safety rules better and how important it is to work together well in an emergency. All of these tasks helped me learn a lot about quality and safety management, improve my communication and teamwork skills, and learn how to solve problems in a structured organisation before they happen.
I participated in internal audits across departments like FEM, HRA, and Procurement. I helped review documents, identify non-conformities, prepare audit checklists, and understand ISO 9001, 14001, 45001, and 37001 requirements. This gave me hands-on exposure to root cause analysis, corrective action processes, and how compliance systems work across departments.
I reformatted and updated SOPs to meet ISO structure and formatting standards. I ensured version control, used document codes, and incorporated PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycles. I also helped manage Integrated Management System (IMS) documents and ensured consistency across forms, SOPs, and internal registers.
I was involved in multiple emergency response drills, first as a time checker and later as a member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT). These drills gave me practical experience in teamwork, coordination, and rapid decision-making under simulated emergency conditions.
I reviewed the company’s Legal Register and created a department-specific Legal Compliance Checklist to close the gap in implementation tracking. This task involved coordinating feedback from multiple departments and aligning checklist items with regulatory requirements. It gave me a real-world understanding of compliance systems and audit preparedness
I produced monthly awareness videos on ISO standards and helped create posters and buntings for the IMS campaign. I co-led the Road Safety Campaign during Hari Raya, where I developed the awareness video and event gimmick. These projects taught me how to communicate technical safety concepts in a creative and engaging way.
I assisted with an incident investigation involving the MTT Lumut vessel and supported documentation for the insurance claim. I also delivered Safety Induction briefings to new employees and contractors, improving my public speaking skills and understanding of QHSSE onboarding protocols.
As part of my internship at SPT Services Sdn. Bhd., I developed a digital Non-Conformance Report (NCR) Tracking System to improve how internal audit findings were reported, tracked, and followed up across departments.
Previously done manually, the NCR process was transformed using Microsoft Power Automate, Forms, Excel, and Word, allowing real-time data collection, auto-generated reports, and centralized storage. I also connected the system to Power BI to visualize closure rates and departmental performance.
This project reduced delays, minimized errors, and improved audit readiness. It was well-received by the team for being more efficient, transparent, and user-friendly compared to the manual method.
I have officially completed my internship at SPT Services Sdn Bhd under the QHSSE Department on 4 August 2025. Throughout this internship, I gained valuable experience in quality and risk management, internal audits, legal compliance, and business continuity planning.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation to my supervisor and the entire SPTS team for their support and guidance. This internship has significantly contributed to my professional development and prepared me for future career opportunities in the industry.
