Mandarin Chinese

Mandarin Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world and the official language of China, Taiwan, and Singapore. Known as Putonghua in Mainland China and Guoyu in Taiwan, it’s based on the Beijing dialect, uses simplified characters, and has a tonal structure with four main tones.

Cantonese

Cantonese, or Yueyu, is a primary language in Hong Kong, Macau, and the Guangdong province of China. With six to nine tones and traditional characters, it is distinct from Mandarin in pronunciation and writing. It is widely spoken among Chinese communities in Southeast Asia, North America, and Australia.
