Search Strategies + Tips
Here are some really helpful tips to search for better results more effectively. I will be doing live demos during my presentation to you all so if you want any help afterwards, please don't hesitate to make an appointment! These are easy strategies but when you're using them for the first few times in a database, it's so easy to forget!
Truncation
A search technique that can improve your search results is called truncation. Truncating a word means that you are able to search different forms of the same word at the same time. You'll use symbols, called wildcards, to replace word endings. The most common symbols are shown here.
Asterisk*
Putting an asterisk * after the word will search for all forms of that word. Truncation can save time and expand your search to include related words.
politic* = politics, politician, political, politic, politicians
paint* = paint, painterly, painter, painters, painting, paintings
The Hashtag
Use a hashtag # when an alternate spelling might contain an extra character.
col#or = color, colour
The Question Mark
The question mark replaces an unknown character.
wom?n = woman, women, womyn
Phrase searching
Phrase searching narrows your search results by allowing you to define precisely how you want the words to appear.

"Asia Minor"
"cultural norms"

Boolean (AND/OR)
AND Narrows the search because it requires that all keywords be in the results
