S2 Associates Inc. was established in Napa, California, in 1996, initially as an environmental design firm with a primary focus on exhibition design. Over the years, the firm expanded its services to include museum exhibit design, exhibit content research and development, conceptual and final design documentation, production management, and fundraising renderings. 1999 Daniel Wodarcyk became a partner, contributing specialized experience in museum exhibition planning and design. His involvement significantly broadened the firm's capabilities within cultural, educational, and institutional contexts.
The firm’s expertise lies in creating interactive exhibits designed around core themes of culture, technology, and science. S2’s process emphasizes collaboration, ensuring clients are actively involved from concept to completion. By combining its internal resources and design expertise with the client's specialized content knowledge, S2 consistently delivers engaging visitor experiences aligned directly with each client's educational objectives.
S2 Associates’ collaborative approach has defined its reputation from its earliest significant project, The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, California. This approach continued to evolve through subsequent work, notably with the Liberty Science Center in New Jersey and the Nevada Discovery Museum. The company maintains strong relationships with a broad network of exhibit producers, designers, and industry professionals both domestically and internationally.
Each project begins with a structured workshop at the S2 Associates studio along the Napa River. During these sessions, stakeholders, exhibit specialists, and key project team members come together to establish clear objectives and creative solutions. Regular and detailed communication throughout each project ensures consistency, clarity, and successful execution.
The meticulous management practices adopted by S2 Associates guarantee that each exhibit project meets its deadlines and budget parameters. Despite project size or complexity, S2 delivers engaging exhibits distinguished by their interactive qualities and educational value.
S2 Associates has comprehensive in-house capabilities that support all stages of exhibit development. These capabilities include master planning, stakeholder workshops, consensus building, educational goal setting, detailed content research and development, concept design, exhibit design development, graphic design, final design documentation, production contracting, and installation oversight.
S2 utilizes advanced design and production software for drafting and construction documents, including Vectorworks, AutoCAD, and Revit. The team uses Rhino and Unreal Engine for three-dimensional visualization and modeling. Adobe Creative Suite supports graphic design, while Smartsheet and Procore software platforms streamline project management and coordination. The company also offers prototyping, mock-up development, 3D printing, and physical modeling.
S2 Associates has completed numerous projects for museums and corporate clients on local, national, and international scales. Among the notable exhibits developed by S2 Associates are the following:
Under Daniel Wodarcyk's leadership, S2 Associates developed and designed the Innovation Gallery for the Tech Museum in San Jose, California. This gallery, which encompasses an area of 8,000 square feet, introduces visitors to five key technological fields integral to Silicon Valley's identity: invention, microprocessing, robotics, lasers, and computer software. This exhibit further solidified S2’s role as a leading design firm in the field of technology-focused exhibitions.
S2 Associates played a critical role in establishing the Nevada Discovery Museum, a pioneering children's museum in Northern Nevada designed for visitors aged eight to 12, with additional dedicated exhibits for younger children. The exhibits focus on regional history, sustainability, natural history, and innovation, with interactive and immersive elements central to the visitor experience.
S2 Associates managed the detailed design development phase of the “Skyscraper!” exhibit at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey. The exhibit, which occupies a total space of 12,800 square feet, including a 1,500-square-foot mezzanine, explores the architectural, engineering, technological, and planning challenges behind skyscraper construction through diverse presentation methods.
The historical exhibit “Building Pleasanton,” designed by S2 Associates at the Museum on Main in Pleasanton, California, illustrates the evolution of the town from its indigenous Ohlone history through settlement, mission influences, Phoebe Hearst’s contributions, and its development during pre- and post-war periods. Artifacts, visual media, and historical imagery provide visitors with an informative journey through the town's history.
Other significant projects include the permanent exhibit “Gold, Greed and Speculation” at the Sacramento History Museum, highlighting Sacramento’s origins during the California Gold Rush. At the Hayward Area Historical Society, S2 Associates created the exhibit “Your Story,” using large-scale books and interactive components to narrate personal stories from Hayward residents, recognizing Hayward’s historical significance as a transportation hub.
S2 Associates also created a distinctive exhibit for V. Sattui Winery, one of Napa Valley’s oldest wineries. Set within two stone caves, the exhibit details the winery's history from its founding in San Francisco in the late 1800s through its closure during the Prohibition era to its successful revival in the 1970s. The presentation integrates historical artifacts and immersive visuals, creating a memorable visitor experience.
Additionally, S2 Associates has designed several exhibits intended explicitly for young visitors, including projects at Clayton Children’s Museum, the Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose, Liberty Science Center, Hayward Area Historical Society, and Bay Area Discovery Museum. Each exhibit encourages curiosity, interactive participation, and hands-on educational activities, reflecting S2’s ongoing commitment to enriching educational experiences for children.
