Program Description: STRIPES meets weekly after school to address the academic and social needs of our students. STRIPES students are required to set academic and personal goals for the year. They are expected to monitor their academic progress through data tracking. Each STRIPES member will track all test and quiz scores. Our students are also responsible for obtaining growth in the following four non-cognitive areas, Academic Behaviors, Academic Perseverance, Academic Mindsets, and Learning Strategies. STRIPES students also work on personal areas of growth such as attitude and discipline through journaling and life experiences.
The STRIPES program seeks to expose students to experiences outside the classroom that connects the importance and purpose of education. Our students visit several universities, talk with many professors and learn firsthand from college students. In addition, STRIPES students have the opportunity to learn from professionals in their community about how they have achieved success and attained their personal goals.
The STRIPES program is designed to give each student the skills to compete in all areas of life. The STRIPES program addresses the needs of the whole child leaving nothing to chance. Lack of academic achievement is addressed on an ongoing basis through data tracking, tutoring, and partnerships between students, staff, and families. Classroom teacher involvement is critical as well for timely interventions to ensure academic growth.
The STRIPES program also addresses the basic needs of students so that they are able to focus in the classroom. The STRIPES program and the Equity Specialist serve as an extension of the students’ families. The Equity Specialist will serve as a role model, teacher, and mentor to the STRIPES students.
