What is STRIPES?

The STRIPES program was originally designed in 2008 for students who struggled academically in the classroom, didn’t have a strong support system around them, and lacked a vision and purpose in their life. The STRIPES program addresses the intellectual, socio-emotional, and identity development in students. The goal of the STRIPES program is for students to have a clear understanding of the importance and purpose of education, along with how to use education to open whatever door they choose to walk through. STRIPES students will have many opportunities to take part in “exposure trips” which serve to ignite our students’ aspirations around education. Our students will also benefit from being connected to strong social networks (university partnerships, internships, mentor connections, etc) which in turn leads to greater opportunities and teaches them how to navigate various social settings. Each STRIPES member will be provided with a mentor to serve as a role model and accountability partner. The ultimate goal of the STRIPES program is when our students leave the program, they will be strong, productive, contributing members of society.

Background

Cohort Risk Factors: Our students have been exposed to years of low-level education and low expectations from staff. They have experienced Racial Battle Fatigue (RBF) from stereotype threats, microaggressions, and microinvalidations which sometimes can contribute to a lack of motivation towards school. Some students have also experienced various levels of trauma in their life.
