I am a Senior Economist in the Development Research Group (DECRG) at the World Bank. My research focuses on uncovering the root causes of gender inequality in developing countries and identifying effective pathways to promote gender equity. I am an applied micro-economist interested in development economics, the economics of gender and the family, and political economy.
I hold a PhD in Economics from Columbia University, an MA in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, and a BA (Honors) in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. I am also a Research Fellow at the Institute for Labor Economics (IZA).
Before joining the World Bank in 2020, I served as an Associate Professor of Economics at Boston College (2013–2020). Currently, I sit on the boards of two research initiatives of the BRAC Institute of Governance and Development—WEE-DiFine and WEE-Connect—and serve on the Technical Advisory Group of the FP-Impact Consortium. I also co-lead the World Bank’s Center for Research on Women and Jobs (CRWJ) and am a regular contributor to the Development Impact blog.
