I worked with an editor, graphic designer, and other subject matter experts in 2016 to revise and update the 4-H garden curriculum. I analyzed each lesson and the learning objectives to reorganize lessons and integrate new content. The curriculum consists of four levels for youth in grades 3 through 12 and a Helper’s Guide. Each level includes content with hands-on activities.
During the update, I took the opportunity to update activities to meet new audiences. Traditionally, the curriculum was created for youth with large, backyard gardens. Realizing the need to reach urban audiences, I added new lessons and modified existing lessons to incorporate square foot gardening, patio gardening, and container gardening.
Additionally, I updated the display options to incorporate vegetables that diverse audiences would commonly eat in their homes. The curriculum is used across the nation and can be purchased at the 4-H Mall.
