I wrote and reported on digital topics for Radio Ink Magazine, emcee’d for major concerts and events, sat on the board of directors for a local charity, came in 3rd place at the Allen County Fair demolition derby, wrote and produced many radio documentaries, and was a go-to rib cook-off judge at different competitions.
My coffee mug was in the background of the TV show Glee, Jimmy Fallon made a joke about one of my radio promotions, Bob Costas knows my name and Alice Cooper once strangled me.
I had the honor to induct Bob Sievers into the National Radio Hall of Fame. Even though I never had the honor of meeting Bob, I was able to learn so much of him by documenting his legacy with the community of Fort Wayne. As a bonus to that ceremony, Bob’s daughter and I sat on the original Wayne’s World couch, which in retrospect may have been off limits.
I won a Marconi for Medium Market Station of the Year. Some of the greatest compliments of my professional career happened in Fort Wayne. Legendary broadcaster Bob Chase once told me, “You would have fit in during WOWO’s prime.” Charlie Butcher wouldn’t allow me to be humble when speaking of this award – as he wanted to make it clear this was because of my efforts leading the station.
This was one of the most unique promotions ever – we renamed the city of “Cridersville” to “Snidersville” for a day. Dee Snider and his family spent a few days in Lima to celebrate. He was up front in our annual parade, he co-hosted my morning show and played only Hair music, we toured the Lima Army Tank Plant and stood on some real heavy metal, but most of all we raised money for his charity – March of Dimes Bikers for Babies.
Over the years I’ve seen many awards from group efforts like Station of the Year… to personal awards such as PD of the Year to best Newscast. The second greatest award happens when a listener remembers and recognizes the work that you do. The first greatest award usually happens on Fathers Day when my kids gift “#1 dad” printed card or coffee mug.
I’m looking forward to making many more memories in the future.
