I created this project as part of our start-of-the-year Community unit in Social Studies.
Learners explored different aspects of community through collaborative goal setting and rule-making. In addition they previewed skills and ideas they would learn throughout the school year. In small groups, students then created their own communities with rules, rights and responsibilities and descriptions of what it might be like to live in their community.Â
I created this lesson as part of an "American Culture" lesson while completing my M.Ed. and teaching Grade 4 at TH School.
The class consisted of Vietnamese and Korean students living in Hanoi. In this lesson they learned about multiculturalism in the United States and specifically how aspects of their own cultures began to be woven into the fabric of the American experience.
I collaborated school-wide with teachers, administrators, and the IT department to launch the WIDA MODEL test for 300+ Students. In collaboration with my colleagues we analyzed student growth, areas of concern, and made recommendations for how to grow the department in the next school year to best meet the needs of the learners.
I attended the 4 day WIDA Institute in Kuala Lumpur and then led several training sessions in school to share the knowledge and skills learned with staff from pre-k to secondary. We evaluated actions based on what we were already doing well, and needed to work on and discussed concrete methods for teaching language alongside content to students with diverse levels of English Language Development
This project will explore ways that educators can improve intergroup relations in the classroom, specifically between the majority Vietnamese students and minority South Korean fourth-grade students at TH School. There is conflict between the two groups in both the primary and secondary school. Anecdotal reports from colleagues and teachers at this and other schools indicate that conflict also exists at other schools and tensions exist in the wider community. What can teachers do to improve intergroup relations?
