When comparing rigid materials for usage in a VR Glove, there are three important qualities: price, density, and yield strength. While other factors will be included in the comparison they are less important.
Based on the table above, the best rigid plastic material to go with would be PETG, polyethylene terephthalate glycol, as it excels in all three of the main categories. PETG is a fairly lightweight material that is cheap, easy to acquire, and relatively strong. Although it can be harder to 3D print, the increase in strength, durability, and melting temperature easily makes up for it.
Although metals and carbon fiber have use cases where they are highly effective. For the use case of a VR glove, the increase in yield Strength and resistance to elements does not justify the increase in manufacturing costs or the increase in weight. So for this project metals and similar materials will not be used.
When comparing flexible materials for usage in a VR Glove, there are three important qualities: price, density, and shore A hardness. While other factors will be included they are less important.
Based on the table above, the best flexible material for this application is Bambo Lab’s TPU. This is because although it is a harder material, having a shore rating of 95A instead of 85A or 70A, the price per KG is much lower.
