These are adventures free of harm,

Dreamed by sleepers, toasty warm,

After the stories, read and told,

After the video chats that pulled

Far off friends into the room,

After the games we played for fun,

After the meals we shared as one,

Passing food with grateful hands,

Washed with soap again and again,

That cleaned the knobs and panes and pans

Of the house we sheltered in.

When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

Tips from Principal Peg:

  1. Just do your best. Please do not fret or worry if your child doesn't finish all the work assigned or if he or she has a meltdown that day and refuses to do anything. It's okay. We need to remember that this is all very confusing and scary for children and we have to give them some time to adjust. You will have good days and not so good days. Each day, just start fresh and keep things going the best you can.

  2. Your child will be okay. As a parent myself, I understand that little voice in your head that keeps telling you, "my child is falling behind" or "she is never going to learn to read". I get it. But the good news is that we are all in the same boat. Just know that your child is learning more than you think right now and when we return to school, we will meet your child where he or she is and move them forward as quickly as possible. Let's just all take this off our plate right now and do the best we can.

  3. Find some balance. It's important to schedule their day so they have a balance of academic work, hands-on learning, play, and downtime. I don't usually bake but Sienna and I have made brownies and cornbread and it was a fun, distracting activity to break up the day. Also, getting outside when you can is good for them as well.

  4. Take care of your self. In whatever way you can, take care of yourself during this time. The more relaxed and calm you are, the better your children will feel. I know this is easier said than done but it's important for all of us to remember.

  5. Have virtual playdates. If possible, schedule virtual play dates with a friend. This will help children stay connected with one another. Even if it's just building legos "together" or just talking. It helps to ease the loneliness they may be feeling.
