RVA Street Singers is an inclusive choral music experience that gives a public voice to individuals impacted by homelessness in Richmond by fostering community, acceptance, self-worth, well-being, and creativity in a safe environment. The choir was started by the late Rebecca Tyree, Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education at VCU. Today the choir carries on with Robin Rio as the musical director, with co-founders, Cameron Carter, MSW and Sherri Mathews, accompanist. The goal of the choir is to address the problems of isolation and stigma while increasing collaborative, creative opportunities and providing social-emotional support. The choir reaches some of the city’s most vulnerable citizens, and connects them with the broader community: residents who participate in cultural events, attend live performances and concerts, and participate in supportive gatherings that bring together people with unique needs and concerns. RVA Street Singers provides a safe space for creative expression and community building, fostering a general sense of positivity, acceptance, and wellbeing among members.
