Course Objectives & Goals
Medical Microbiology:
BIG IDEAS:
This lesson provides students with a basic understanding of the field of medical microbiology including major topics, current trends and careers. Students will use this information to give a general summary of the field of medical microbiology.
This lesson will teach students how many careers embody multiple STEM skills and knowledge. Students will explore STEM careers specific to medical microbiology and the educational path needed to achieve such careers. After identifying careers of interest, students will learn how to perform a job search and compare different STEM careers within a pathway.
This lesson will teach students about professional standards and conduct. Students will explore what it means to be professional in a work setting, including time management skills, professional dress, professional communication and collaboration.
This lesson will teach students how to ensure safety when working in a laboratory. Students will explore aspects of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which contribute to lab safety and practice identifying potential hazards and how they should be best managed.
This lesson exposes students to the tools and equipment found in a professional lab setting. Students will practice using the tools and equipment to perform and record accurate measurements using the International System of Units.
This lesson will provide the basics and limitations of science as well as how scientific hypotheses, theories and laws differ by being able to distinguish between them. Performing a scientific inquiry using a multitude of sources will also be detailed.
This lesson will teach students about the history of science and how the concept of science evolved over time. Students will explore important scientific figures and how various scientific innovations came to exist. Additionally, students will identify current trends in modern science and describe what they think the future of science will look like.
