About Us

The Rusty MauiCat Collective (RMCC) was inspired by a 22–year–old cat named Rusty, who lived in a gulch along the Wailea beach walking path on Maui. Various people volunteered over the years to neuter, feed and provide him medical care over the course of his long life.

It takes a village to care for the community cats of Maui. Our beautiful island welcomes so many cat loving visitors, we want to build a bridge between cat lovers who care and the big hearted volunteers who donate their time, money and energy and could use their support. RMCC provides a way for cat lovers to donate much needed funds to our efforts through cash donations as well as by purchasing much needed items from our Amazon wishlist for our island's many volunteer cat caretakers.

What We Do

Each cat trapped and fixed, male or female, helps to decrease the overall population and makes a huge difference in the future feline landscape of Maui. No amount of effort toward this issue is wasted. If you are a resident of Maui and want to practice TNR in your area, please the contact the Maui Humane Society or contact us at rustymauicat@gmail.com. You can also volunteer to manage a colony near you, either full-time or part-time.

The Rusty MauiCat Collective has an annual yard sale to raise funds
You can donate high quality items in good condition in April each year. Every dollar raised at our yard sales benefits community cats of Maui. Please email us at rustymauicat@gmail.com if you have an item to donate.

We organize and coordinate volunteer feeder schedules
We feed seven days a week in South Maui (Kihei and Wailea) and can always use help. We also know feeders island-wide who would appreciate feeding assistance. The more of us there are, the more we can decrease the pressure on each of us and have more flexibility. Our current goal is to relieve our group President of the role of feeder so she can focus on TNR efforts. Whether you're here seasonally or can only fill in on an on-call basis, every bit helps. If you have more time, you can sign up to feed a colony on the same day every week – there is room for you! We are a friendly group, and this is a fun way to connect with other animal lovers as we have potlucks and other fun activities throughout the year.

We gather food and supplies to distribute to island feeders and cat caretakers
Many people want to make a difference by donating cat food and supplies, which is extremely helpful. Please check out our Amazon list for our current needs. Or, cash donations are always welcome so we may purchase cat food locally.

We connect and collaborate with other cat focused non-profits
We believe it's important to coordinate our community efforts and support each other. We believe that each of us makes a darn good finger, but together we can make a mighty fist! Check out our Voluntourism page to see all the ways you can support animals on your next trip to Maui!

Our Values & Beliefs

It is possible for all sides to come together to solve this crisis. We are stronger when we work together.
No one animal is more important than another, and all animals deserve our care, humane treatment, and responsible policy-making.
It is of value to support the volunteers who spend their time and money caring for community cats.
Anyone who cares about cats plays a part in finding a solution. Some can give money, some can give time, experience or encouragement–we each have a role to play and it all matters.
TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) is the best available humane option at this time to curb the cat population growth. If we manage the population, over time, we solve the problem.
