The following pdo statement generated an error if $opinion is a long text string. The column opinion is type Text in my postgres table. The query succeeds if $opinion is under a certain number of characters. 1000 characters works fine. 2000 characters fails with "could not receive data from client: Connection reset by peer".

I've since found -could-not-receive-data-from-client-connection-reset-by-peer which indicates it could be a problem with the client configuration. My client is libpg and PQconnectdb() is giving me a CONNECTION_OK return. It works at least partly.

Having said that I did make some functions to get data of the user. I'm on the wrong computer or else I'd post them. They used FromStr to read in lots of different types, and automatically looped and asked for another line if they couldn't parse what was typed. They also allowed for default options etc. I'll try and turn it into a crate maybe, it would be especially useful for people just starting who want to get data from stdin easily.

We received an email address and a name as data attached to the form submitted by the user. Both fields are going through an additional round of validation - SubscriberName::parse and SubscriberEmail::parse. Those two methods are fallible - they return a String as error type to explain what has gone wrong:

Capacity planning was also one of the more important reasons why the site hasn\u2019t gone down. Twitter has two data centers running that can handle the entire site being failed into it. Every important service that runs can be run out of one data center. The total capacity available at anytime is actually 200%. This is only for disaster scenarios, most of the time both data centers are serving traffic. Data centers are at most 50% utilized. Even this would be busy in practice. When people calculate their capacity needs, they figure out what is needed for one data center serving all traffic, then normally add headroom on top of that! There is a ton of server headroom available for extra traffic as long nothing needs to be failed over. An entire data center failing is pretty rare, it only happened once in my five years there.

Let me tell you that this decision was a huge mistake and that the experiment has utterly failed. Using static dispatch has been a constant source of frustration due to the difficulty in passing types around and reasoning about trait bounds. The situation had gotten so bad that I dreaded adding new functionality to my services whenever a change to a statically-typed struct was needed, because that meant adding yet another type parameter and plumbing it through tens of source files.

This crate does not try to be clone free or to support no_std scenarios. Memory is allocated to serialize anddeserialize into.
