Russia vs Croatia live streaming: Preview

MOSCOW, RUSSIA – JUNE 14: Aleksandr Golovin of Russia celebrates victory with team mate Denis Cheryshev of Russia during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Group A match between Russia and Saudi Arabia at Luzhniki Stadium on June 14, 2018 in Moscow, Russia.

Two of Group H’s big-hitters go head-to-head in front of a sold-out 80,000 capacity crowd in Russia.

Just three years ago, the Luzhniki Stadium hosted the World Cup Final which, of course, Croatia featured in.

Now though, the 2018 hosts and and runners-up face a real battle just to be at Qatar 2022.

This was always going to be, possibly, the most open group and so it proved in March’s triple-header of fixtures.

Russia started with back-to-back wins, first 3-1 in Malta and then 2-1 against Slovenia at Fisht Olympic Stadium.

Captain Artem Dzyuba scoring three across the two wins.

But then, they were beaten 2-1 at Štadión Antona Malatinského by Slovakia.

Mário Fernandes seemingly snatching a point only for the home side to win it just moments later.

Croatia’s month went in reverse as they started with an away defeat, losing 1-0 in Ljubljana to Slovenia.

But, the Blazers bounced back with successive wins in Rijeka, first 1-0 over Malta and 3-0 over Cyprus.

So, these two nations led the way in Group H but any one of four nations could realistically finish in the top two spots.

Since then, of course, both nations took part in this summer’s European Championships.

Russia went out in the group stages, beating Finland but losing 2-0 to Belgium and 4-1 to Denmark in the final group game.

This cost Stanislav Cherchesov his job as Head Coach so Valeri Karpin will take charge for the very first time.

Zlatko Dalić’s side did marginally better, drawing with Czech Republic and beating Scotland, both at Hampden, to reach the knockout phase.

Croatia though went out in the round of 16, losing a crazy game 5-3 to Spain in Copenhagen.

Now, attention for both turns to being at the World Cup in November 2022.

Who will win this crucial clash in Moscow?

Prediction: Russia 1-2 Croatia

These two last met in the World Cup quarter-finals in 2018 with Croatia winning a penalty shootout in Sochi.

In fact, Croatia are unbeaten in four fixtures with Russia; their only other competitive encounters came in Euro 2008 qualifying, both finished goalless.

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND – JUNE 22: Luka Modric of Croatia celebrates a goal during the UEFA Euro 2020 Championship Group D match between Croatia and Scotland at Hampden Park on June 22, 2021 in Glasgow, United Kingdom.
